The Maggid:  The Weekly Newsletter of MJCDS

This week's parasha, Vayakhel-Pekukdei, invites us to consider the interplay between individual and the community. The word vayakhel, means gathered, as in "And Moshe gathered the whole Israelite community..." It's the same root as words we use to mean community, kahal and kehillah.

We only have a community, though, because of the individuals that comprise it. The Torah makes clear that the Mishkan, the Tabernacle in the wilderness, is built only though the gifts (both physical and skill-based) of each individual Israelite.

This week, Morah Aviva brought this message of the parashah home to students by asking them to name something special that a classmate brings to the MJCDS community. Students created a web of yarn as they appreciated their individual classmates. Students singled out classmates for their humor, sense of fun, and kindness.

We hope all our students grow to understand both the gifts they themselves have to offer their families and communities, as well as the unique gifts that others contribute.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Rebecca

Today we were joined by Eli's mom, Shelby O'Connor, a UW scientist and Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.  Shelby taught students about DNA and led the students in creating their own DNA models made of beads and pipe cleaners.  Thank you so much, Shelby!

The crew of the production 'At the Ark at Eight' visited our 2-5 class and led them in movement exercises and an introduction to the material.  The class will see the play on the 23rd. The play offers a philosophical take on the story of Noah and the Ark from the perspective of three tricky, witty penguins. When they are summoned to the ark, these penguin friends begin a wild adventure. They learn and grow by exploring issues of friendship, companionship, morality and the nature of God. Below, Lilah plays director to our visitors.

Last week, students studied magnetism in Morah Marla's class.
