The Maggid:  The Weekly Newsletter of MJCDS

Overheard at MJCDS this week:

"Math is our superpower!"  --kindergartener Sheleigh and first grader Juliette as they practiced their math facts using the Sushi Math app.

"Mi Kamocha Ba'elim Adonai!" --singing K-1 students as they colored pages about this week's parashah, Beshallah, which features this line from the Song at the Sea.  It was lovely to see them make a connection between the week's parasha and a line they sing every day in tefillot!

"Did you ever want something so bad?"  In book club, second grader Charley helped brainstorm emotional connections to the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  The way she related feelings our students have in their own lives to the intense longings Charlie and the other children feel in the book struck me as very insightful both about the literature and about emotions!

"I was afraid to pet a goat at the zoo!" --kindergartener Heshy, thinking of a time when he was scared but overcame his fear, just like the Israelites in this week's parashah when they crossed the Red Sea.

"What letter is the match?"  --first-grader Lincoln (in the photo above) who created a matching game between ancient Hebrew letters and modern Hebrew letters. In the picture he is quizzing Morah Clara!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Rebecca

Potluck this Sunday
Sunday, Feb. 1, 10 - 11:30 am, Sidney-Chesler home

Now that Beth Israel Center is congregating on Mound Street again, Dan and I are hosting a post-Yom Rishon potluck lunch afterwards.  Yom Rishon is the art, movement, music, stories, and projects event for preschoolers and their families held at Beth Israel Center once per month. The next one is 10 to 11:30 am on Sunday February 1.

As you may know, just down the road (or rather, just up the hill) from Beth Israel Center is our house (1010 Grant Street)! I hope you can join us for a potluck lunch in Madison around
11:30 am on February 1 (right after Yom Rishon), regardless of whether you attend Yom Rishon.  Please bring a dairy/parve dish to share.  All are welcome.  No RSVP required.

There's room to play inside and out.  Those who want to play outside should bring snowpants and boots!

Best wishes,

Naomi and Dan
