The Maggid:  The Weekly Newsletter of MJCDS

Among my favorite moments this week is the one pictured above, when Lincoln, a first-grader, read a Frog and Toad book to his class. He did such a great job and the look of pride on his face was priceless! Yashar koach, Lincoln!

In Judaics, students read a famous poem in Hebrew by Hannah Senesh that featured an abundance of natural imagery. Through the poem, students learned or reviewed Hebrew words for these natural features, such as water, sea, sand, thunderclap, and sky. Students then began writing Hebrew poems of their own based around some of these nature words.

Students' study of Hebrew poetry will culminate in their participation in the RAVSAK national Hebrew poetry contest. RAVSAK is the organization of pluralistic Jewish schools like ours. In the past, MJCDS had a student place first in the contest!

We relish the opportunity to introduce students to modern Hebrew poems and to see what they can do as they try their hand at expressing themselves in their own poems.  I can't wait to read their creations!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Rebecca

New class with Rabbi Rebecca:  Foundations of Jewish Family Living
This class will provide a thought-provoking encounter with the core values of Judaism. There will be 10 classes on Sunday mornings beginning Feb. 1, taught by Rabbi Rebecca Ben-Gideon and developed by the renowned Florence Melton Adult Mini-School, a project of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Each lesson focuses on one of the great "master stories" from the Bible and the Jewish tradition, and also includes texts and articles that analyze and contemporize the issues. Discussion is lively and the opportunity to share the challenges of parenting provides a great backdrop for the class.

Topics include being created in God's image, welcoming guests, caring for the environment, teaching respect, creating Jewish space, the value of Shabbat rest, prayer, remembering Egypt, pursuing peace, and the Jewish value of hope.

Dates:
Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22
March 1, 22
April 19, 26
May 10, 17, 31

Space is limited. Cost is $96 including materials. Register at

In art class this week, Morah Trista taught students about illuminated texts. Students took their first initial and transformed it into something fanciful (Baila's "B" turned into a magic quail) as well as colorful and beautiful.
