The Maggid:  The Weekly Newsletter of MJCDS

This is a "tree" we just planted in Morah Marla's classroom. We hope to have a full grown tree to celebrate by Tu Bishvat. You can see

that so far we have roots and seeds.

Similarly, we are in the beginning stages of occupying our new spaces at Beth Israel Center.  If

you stop by I'll show you the light-filled classrooms; a separate space for eating, indoor recess, art class and more; my office; and of course my favorite: the storage room!

Those of you who have taken my tour know that I am not joking. The storage room holds our many learning materials and enables us to be very intentional and selective about what materials we keep in the classrooms, making them peaceful and uncluttered learning environments.

Thank you to Beth Israel Center for welcoming us back. And thank you to everyone who worked so hard and gave their time and muscle to help us get here.

2015 is off to a wonderful start.

Shabbat Shalom and Happy Hanukkah,

Rabbi Rebecca

Drop off and Pick Up Information
*Morning drop-off:  You may drop your child using the circular driveway or accompany your child inside. Please note: in the first few months of our occupancy at BIC, there will likely be fewer spaces in the lot at morning dropoff due to vehicles related to finishing work still happening in the building.  You may need to find street parking in the mornings.

*Afternoon pick-up: As in the past, you may come in and pick up your child or alternatively, children can be brought to the circular drive for pickup. We will have more information for you soon about where the best place to hang out at pickup time is.

During the day, if you need access to the building, come to the same doors and use the buzzer to gain entry.

New class with Rabbi Rebecca:  Foundations of Jewish Family Living
This class will provide a thought-provoking encounter with the core values of Judaism. There will be 10 classes on Sunday mornings beginning Feb. 1, taught by Rabbi Rebecca Ben-Gideon and developed by the renowned Florence Melton Adult Mini-School, a project of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Each lesson focuses on one of the great "master stories" from the Bible and the Jewish tradition, and also includes texts and articles that analyze and contemporize the issues. Discussion is lively and the opportunity to share the challenges of parenting provides a great backdrop for the class.

Topics include being created in God's image, welcoming guests, caring for the environment, teaching respect, creating Jewish space, the value of Shabbat rest, prayer, remembering Egypt, pursuing peace, and the Jewish value of hope.

Dates:
Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22
March 1, 22
April 19, 26
May 10, 17, 31

Space is limited. Cost is $96 including materials. Register at

Morah Clara and K-1 Torah study.

Students this week learned about the Scientific Method.  They practiced the steps in the Alka
Seltzer Lava Lamp experiment.  What would happen when oil, water, food coloring were mixed?  What would happen if they added Alka Selzer?

Amelia is on step 2:  research.
