This week I attended a conference of Jewish day school leaders from across the country and from Canada.
We began with a study session about the purpose of Torah study and the complexities of doing so in a pluralistic environment. It was a very powerful experience to study with 500 other people engaged in the same work as we are, the work of building schools that instill not only knowledge and skills, but an emotional connection to and relationship with Torah.
Rabbi Daniel Lehman, President of Hebrew College in Boston, led the session. "Spiritual education seeks to shape an inner life that is rich and deep while inspiring students to serve others and reach beyond the self," he said.
This resonated deeply for me. At MJCDS, I am fond of saying, students understand the connections between who they are, what they learn, and how they can make the world a better place.
I kept these ideas in mind as I attended sessions on topics such as recruitment, retention, and creating connections throughout one's community. And I returned to Madison refreshed, inspired and ready to get back to the practical work of leading our children and our school toward a bright future.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Rebecca |

Photos | Science and Tu'Bishvat Over the past few weeks, students painted a vegetation-themed mural. As part of their study of plant biology, students created models of key parts of the flower.
They then installed these items as part of a science-art center that includes the mural, the flower models, and models of animals who participate in the pollination process. Today Aimee Coen continues our study of plants with an experiment involving cabbage, a blender, and acids and bases.
Shahanna Baldon was our special guest for a Kabbalat Shabbat in honor of Dr. Martin. Luther King, Jr. She read a book about Dr. King and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel's work in the civil rights movement. Thanks, Shahanna!

Vart, Vart, Zog Mir Nisht! (Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me!)
Saturday, February 8, Beth Israel Center
Some parshiot are full of mystery, others are full of...trivia. Come to Beth Israel Center on Shabbat morning, February 8, as we explore Parshat Tetzaveh through the format of the popular NPR weekly news quiz show, "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me." Do you have a mind for the details of the Torah? Is deeper exploration of Torah's spiritual themes your thing? Are mystical or fanciful midrashim your speed? All facets of relating to Torah will be tested during this insightful and perhaps irreverent take on the parsha hosted by Jonathan Pollack, Jordan Rosenblum, and Rabbi Joshua Ben-Gideon during Shabbat morning services.
