The Maggid:  The Weekly Newsletter of MJCDS

This Shabbat we will begin reading the second book of the Torah, the book of Shemot/Exodus.

One of the key elements of our Judaics curriculum is study of the weekly parashah. This week, our students imagined how it felt to be Moses when he encounters the burning bush. Here are a few of their imaginative and insightful interpretations:

"When I saw a burning bush, which was God, He said go back to Egypt.  Everyone needs you, especially the kids. I got so anxious, it felt like there was an explosive volcano in my mind. I said to the burning bush, I can't go there again. I can't tell Pharoah that I murdered someone, but on the other hand, all the slaves are needing me.  I'm sorry, but I don't know. Wait a second. How come you can't pick someone else. Now I have a new family."  -Baila, Grade 3

"I didn't like having to go back to Egypt, and it was a hard decision."  -Noam, Grade 2

"How is the burning bush talking?  Go back to Egypt and tell Pharoah let my people go?  I....I...I...Fine, I will do it.  I went to Egypt and said, 'Let my people go.'"  -Shiloh, Grade 2

These modern midrashim (imaginative interpretations of the text) knocked my socks off. The students not only knew what happens in the story and incorporated key details (like Moses's stutter), but also truly took ownership of the story by imagining the emotions Moses experienced. I'll be thinking about these new pieces of Torah they created all Shabbat long.

Shabbat Shalom and have a wonderful break,
Rabbi Rebecca

"MJCDS has prepared me for the future both academically and as a Jew. It taught me the importance of being nice to everyone, and prepared me for the choices I may have to face as I get older. I loved learning about my Jewish culture and history during my time at MJCDS and it has prepared me to live a Jewish life as I grow up."

- MJCDS Graduate, Ilana G.
