The Maggid:  The Weekly Newsletter of MJCDS

This week was filled with science. On Monday, students visited the UW Geology museum as part of their study of rocks and minerals.  At recess, we observed lady bugs. (See photo above) Today, we were visited by Laura Michael, a microbiologist who has worked in pharmaceutical development. Laura explained the science of and importance of good hand washing and hygiene.

Many thanks to Laura and to MJCDS mom Aimee Coen for arranging both the museum visit and this presentation.

Apparently, our students are already very good at washing their hands, but now they understand why it's so important! They were inspired by Laura's visit to write the following poem:

Gorgeous molecules
Every germ is microscopic
Reproducing every second
Microbeings
Scattered everywhere

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Rebecca

School Security
Please use the Randall street door to enter the BIC building. The ramp access door should only be used at dismissal time. On Fridays when you arrive for Kabbalat Shabbat, or if you are coming to school at any time during the school day, you should use the Randall Street door. That door is always unlocked during school hours, and each parent should know the code for the inner magnetized door. If you don't, please contact Rabbi Ben-Gideon. Thank you for your help in keeping our school secure.

Friday Coffees at the Froth House
Join other MJCDS parents at the Froth House (11 N Allen St) each Friday after drop-off. Questions? Contact Aimee Coen at alcoen@gmail.com.

Jewish Learning for your Family
Can you be Grateful and Disappointed at the Same Time?

Rabbi Shai Held writes "A Jew is, ideally, a human being who, like Leah, can find her way to gratitude without having everything she wants or even needs."

"It's not often that a biblical character makes you want to cry, but if you pay careful attention to the matriarch Leah, she can break your heart..." Click here to read the rest of this commentary
