The Maggid:  The Weekly Newsletter of MJCDS

This week's exciting development was...normality. Though we enjoyed all of the fall holidays, from Rosh Hashanah through Simhat Torah, we were excited to have a full week of school for the first time in a while. Perhaps that's the blessing of this new month of Cheshvan: we've had so many special days that now a weekly routine seems alluring.

One of our daily routines as a school is morning assembly. And embedded into assembly each morning is the Jewish tradition's routine of beginning each day with a series of prayers and meditations that help to set the tone for the day.

A highlight of my week was teaching students a series of morning blessings, bircot hashachar. These blessings help us to be grateful at the start of each day for the ability wake up and know it's morning, for the ability to see, for being created in God's image, for freedom, and for our Jewish heritage. The students created motions to accompany each berachah (blessing) that helped to make their meanings more concrete.

We did have at least one special event this week. MJCDS parent and recording artist Adam Weil (aka Lincoln's dad), came to play for the students. (He received some assistance from Lincoln and his mom, Rebecca.) You can watch a video of one of the songs by clicking the image below. Todah Rabbah (thanks so much) for this treat!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Rebecca

Gym class at the YMCA cartoon-sneakers.jpg
Gym class at the YMCA begins next Thursday. We will be travelling to the YMCA West (located at Whitney and Odana) for a general fitness class with the fabulous Y coaches led by Brian Kavanaugh.  Brian will be visiting us at MJCDS on Wednesday to meet our new students and read a story.

On Thursdays from now on, please make sure that you send your child to school with
a) sneakers/gym shoes and
b) A CARSEAT if your child requires one.

Gym will take place every Thursday, and so if possible, please purchase a carseat, label it and leave it at school.

Finally, we are looking for volunteers to help transport the children to the Y each week.  If you are able to be with us from 1:40-3:15 on Thursdays, please be in touch with Rabbi Ben-Gideon.  Please also let her know how many children you are able to transport in your vehicle.

Curriculum & Sing-a-long Night
Thursday, October 24, 5:45-7 pm
It may seem like an odd combination, but we're betting it will be fun. Pick up more information about MJCDS's curriculum, and have a chance to chat with teachers and with Rabbi Rebecca. Then join music teacher Kenny Lyons for a family sing-a-long. Students, siblings and parents are all invited!

Share a Shabbat
Friday evening, Nov. 1 (Register by Oct. 11)

The celebration of Shabbat has been an important part of our Jewish heritage for thousands of years. Let's celebrate together by having Shabbat dinner with other MJCDS families on Friday, Nov. 1.

Rabbi Ben-Gideon will help match host and guest families. Hosts will determine the details of the evening in their homes. To participate as a guest or a host, please email Rabbi Ben-Gideon or return the interest form to her no later than October 11.  We hope this intimate Shabbat setting will not only be a joyous experience, but also the beginning of new friendships.

Extra Clothes

If you have not yet sent in an extra outfit for your child to have at school, please do so as soon as possible.  If possible, please send it in a bag labeled with your child's name. Thank you!
