| Shalom! | |
We are having an amazing morning--the kind of morning that reminds me exactly how special the learning environment at MJCDS is.
First, I was called into service to help two fifth graders wrestle with a comment of Rashi on this week's Torah portion, and to help them decide which direction their d'var Torah should take.
Should they discuss the seeming injustice of only Miriam being punished for a misdeed she and Aaron seemed to commit? Or would they like to address the issue of lashon ha'ra,speaking badly of others? As the students are two girls about to enter middle school, the latter theme resonated.
Then I checked into the third grade classroom, where one student, whose native language is not English, proudly demonstrated her new skill of telling time in both English and Hebrew. Wow!
FInally, I stopped into the Fraction-Place-Value-Money-Playdough Cookie Shop in the K-2 room, where students have set up a bazaar and are practicing math skills by purchasing one another's creations.
In the midst of all this, multiple classes independently asked if they could delay recess so they could keep working on their projects.
Later today I'm looking forward to artist Kathy Mazur's visit for the World Premiere screening of the fourth and fifth graders' movie, "Purim: An Upside-Down Adventure." If you'd like to join us, be here at 1:15.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Rebecca

Dr. Nanette Goldman, mother of our own Morah Geri, visited school this week and gave a presentation on her archeological work in Israel. She is a professor of Classics at Macalester College whose current research focuses on Jewish poetry of the Second Temple Period and is a supervisor at the Omrit archaelogical excavation in Israel. Thanks, Dr. Goldman!
The Mathematical Marketplace aka the Fraction-Place Value-Money-Playdough Cookie Store!
Grownups and kids alike had fun supporting our school by eating delicious fro-yo at Menchies of Middleton. Thanks to Sarah Byer of our Kehillah Committee for organizing this fun get together.

| Exciting News! Tuition Grant Program for New Students | Amazing news arrived last week: anonymous donors have established tuition grants to enable new students to attend MJCDS tuition-free during the 2013-14 school year.
These grants are being provided independent of financial need as a way to increase the accessibility and affordability of an MJCDS education. The Goodman Scholarships will still be in place to help make day school an affordable option for families with returning students. New students must follow MJCDS standard application for admission, which is at the discretion of the school administration, and the number of open seats for new students may vary by grade. Please help us share this news with any families that may be interested in MJCDS for their children next year. Click on the photo to access more information about this program.
