Shalom!
This week we celebrated the holiday of Shavuot, which commemorates the giving of the Torah.  Learning is a key theme of this festival, as are dairy foods.  Many reasons are given for the custom of eating dairy treats on Shavuot.  One of my favorite explanations is that Torah is like milk: "Like honey and milk [the Torah] lies under your tongue" (Song of Songs 4:11). Just as milk can nourish and sustain human bodies, so too, Torah nourishes our souls.

In that spirit, students made and enjoyed their own vanilla ice cream, thanks to Morah Marla's seemingly endless knowledge of ways to creatively use ziploc bags :) Though today is a rainy day, the gorgeous sunshine on Monday enabled students to do their ice cream making, book club meetings, and other learning outdoors.

This week was a very exciting one for MJCDS in another way.  Donors have established grants that will enable new students at all grade levels to attend MJCDS tuition-free next year.  The donations establishing the grants were made in honor of Sam and Helen Ablove, parents of one of our school founders, Bob Ablove.

We are extremely grateful for and excited about this unprecedented opportunity for more Madison families to take advantage of Jewish day school education.  Please help us spread the word!

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Rebecca

Zoe presents what she learned on a family trip to Paris to students who are studying world cultures!  And at the right, fourth and fifth graders celebrate their graduation from the COPS (Classes on Personal Safety) program, taught by Madison Police Officer Kelly Hoeft.

The beautiful weather earlier in the week enabled us to take our Shavuot celebration outdoors. It's tradition to enjoy dairy treats on Shavuot, so students made and enjoyed their own homemade vanilla ice cream using plastic bags as ice cream makers.  YUM!
Exciting News!  Tuition Grant Program for New Students
Amazing news arrived this week: anonymous donors have established tuition grants to enable new students to attend MJCDS tuition-free during the 2013-14 school year.

These grants are being provided independent of financial need as a way to increase the accessibility and affordability of an MJCDS education. The Goodman Scholarships will still be in place to help make day school an affordable option for families with returning students. New students must follow MJCDS standard application for admission, which is at the discretion of the school administration, and the number of open seats for new students may vary by grade.

Please help us share this news with any families that may be interested in MJCDS for their children next year.  Click on the photo to access more information about this program.
