The Maggid:  The Weekly Newsletter of MJCDS

Shalom!
In the photo above, Zoe (Grade 4) examines a miniature model of Milton House, a stop on the Underground Railroad in the Civil War period, which is located about 50 minutes away from school. Fourth and fifth graders enjoyed a wonderfully informative and engaging hour and a half tour led by the museum's executive director.

My favorite moment was when the students requested to crawl, rather than walk, through the tunnel from the drop-off cabin into the safe room in the main house, as the slaves would have done on their journey to freedom. A picture of the students crawling through the tunnel is below.

Lots of excitement approaches after the rest (I hope) and rejuvenation of Shabbat.  On Sunday, students will dance in Sharsheret, performing to the song Artza Alinu

Tuesday night is Parents Night! It is being hosted by MJCDS parents Yaniv Lazimy and Trista Warrich at the home of our own Morah Clara Lazimy and her husband Rafi. I hope to see you there.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Rebecca

Kindergartener Barkai interprets the word Baruch, which means blessed.

Shiloh (above) and her classmates in K-3 made friends with and studied worms at Wingra Park with Morah Marla and Trista Warrich, who led an introduction to entomology.   Students studied invertebrates throughout the week.  They observed insects in their natural habitat and created a field journal, where they recorded their observations and questions and created illustrations.

Students in Grades 4 and 5 visited Milton House, a stop on the Underground Railroad as part of their examination of the Civil War.  Students crawled through a tunnel between a cabin and a safe room in the basement of the main house, as they tried to imagine what it would have been like to be fugitive slaves on the way to freedom.
