| Shalom! | |
What a full week! On Tuesday we celebrated Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel's Independence Day. We'll continue to celebrate on Sunday with the entire Madison Jewish community (details below). Fourth and fifth graders wrote a beautiful prayer for the State of Israel that they will lead as part of the festivities.
On Wednesday, our friend and teacher Michael Johnson, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, visited us for a second time. Inspired by Michael's first visit earlier in the year, students created road maps for their futures and presented them to one another and to Michael. Many thanks to Michael for coming back to inspire all of us yet again!
On Thursday we attended the Engineering Expo at UW. Our experience was greatly enriched by the many weeks of preparation that parents Yaniv Lazimy and Trista Warrich led and by their sharing the experience with us this week. Todah Rabbah to them and to Naomi Chesler who also shared her ideas and experiences as an engineering expert with students and found us a quiet place to eat our lunches.
Today, fifth graders visited Hamilton Middle School. They seemed very excited to think about the future and to imagine themselves learning and making many new friends as middle schoolers!
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Rebecca

Counting the Days and Making Every Day Count
Counting the days between Passover and Shavuot is a Jewish tradition. The 49 days between the second night of Passover and the beginning of Shavuot is also often a time for reflection on our own spiritual journeys.
The PJ Library program website asks: What are some good ways to Count the Omer with children?
Click here for some ideas on adopting this tradition in your home.
Click here for a primer for adults on the spiritual significance of this period of the Jewish year.

Michael Johnson, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County with MJCDS students and their life "roadmaps," describing their goals for the future and the steps they need to take to achieve them.
On Thursday, students attended the Engineering Expo at the university. MJCDS parents Trista Warrich, Yaniv Lazimy, and Naomi Chesler met us there and explored the exhibits with the children. Above, Yaniv helps students in the Flight Duration competition. Students created flying objects and dropped them off a balcony carrying small model space capsules. The goal was to create an object that would 1) deliver the capsule safely and 2) take the longest to reach the floor.
On Yom HaAtzmaut, students wore blue and white and the whole day was dedicated to celebrating. Throughout the day, Israel content was integrated with a variety of academic areas. There was Dead Sea Science, where students used salt and water to create playdough--which they then shaped into little Western Wall pencil holders. Students used math to decode a special Yom HaAtzmaut message.
