| Shalom! | |
This week we welcomed everyone back from Passover break and ushered in at least a little bit of spring-like weather.
I'm excited to share with you MJCDS's new logo, which as you can see, has a very spring-like feel. I love it, and hope you do, too. The imagery of the tree highlights our conception of Torah as Tree of Life, as well as the growth and blossoming that we see in our students every day. A Jewish star forms the trunk of the tree--just as Jewish values and traditions form the core and roots of our approach to education.
This is, of course, only one "drash" or interpretation on the image above. Feel free to create your own! The logo was created by designer Christine Knorr, who captured so beautifully the spirit of MJCDS.
A massive todah rabbah to board members Zach Galin and Nancy Brower, as well as MJCDS parent Barry Wein, who guided this process and who continue to lend their energy and professional expertise to thinking through how to communicate what goes on in our classrooms to the community.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Rebecca

Yom HaShoah
Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, is this coming Monday, April 8. As with other special days in the Jewish year, we observe Yom HaShoah at school with tefillah (prayer) and limud (study). Our approach to observing this day focuses on 1) learning how Jews commemorate sad events and loss and 2) exploring relevant themes that will be helpful to students as a basis for future learning on this topic.
This year, students in grades K-3 will explore the theme of understanding differences among individuals. Students in grades 4 and 5 will also discuss this theme, making connections to issues of discrimination and prejudice. In tefillot, students in grades 4 and 5 will learn about the mourners kaddish in the context of commemorating Yom Hashoah. Later in the year, fourth and fifth graders will be introduced to Shoah in a small unit designed to parallel their World War II history studies.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

|
| Third Grade: Silly Sentences and Parts of Speech | Third graders searched for adjectives, nouns, adverbs, verbs, prepositions and punctuation in local newspapers.
They wrote silly sentences containing all the parts of speech (Jojo, left) and identified the parts of speech on the back of their illustrated work (Jane, right). Plus, Harel wrote her first story in English! |
