MJCDS Maggid

the weekly newsletter of

 Madison Jewish Community Day School

Shalom!
In this week's Maggid, read about our preparations for this April's UW Engineering Expo.  I admit I smiled as I watched some children building pyramids just before Passover, but it was all in the name of science!

We are grateful to MJCDS parents Trista Warrich and Yaniv Lazimy, who volunteered to coordinate and lead our preparations each week between now and the expo itself in April.  This is no small job, as you can read about below. Todah Rabbah to them both.

I hope that you will be able to attend this year's Passover Wine Tasting and Sale, which will be at my home this Sunday night at 7:30 pm.  It's a great way to stock up on wine for your seder and support MJCDS at the same time. Many thanks to Steve's Wine and Liquors for being such a supportive community partner each year!

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Rebecca

Wine Sale Supporting MJCDS
Passover Wine Tasting & Sale,
Sunday, March 10, 7:30 pm
Join us for our annual Passover Wine Sale at the Ben-Gideon home.  Sample wines for your seder (and beyond), snack on some tasty treats, and enjoy an evening with friends.  Suggested donation of $18/person and a portion of sales benefit MJCDS, thanks to sponsor Steve's Wine and Liquors.   RSVP to jbengideon@gmail.com.

Classes are upstairs next week
as Temple Beth El hosts the Road Home shelter for families.  Visitors to school should use Temple Beth El's buzzer, as we will not have access to the school's buzzer system for admitting guests.  We can still be reached by our regular office phone, 204-9900.  Families will be issued a security code for the week that will open the door, which will arrive in your email inboxes soon.
We are very excited to attend this year's UW Engineering Expo which will be held in April. MJCDS parents Yaniv Lazimy and Trista Warrich have participated before with their family, and are volunteering their time and experience to prepare MJCDS students for the big day!
Engineering Expo is a three day event held every two years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's College of Engineering. The Expo is run entirely by students and brings over 10,000 visitors to campus; participants include Fortune 500 industry leaders, engineering student organizations on campus, individuals displaying their engineering projects and ideas, and thousands of students and members of the community.

During the first two days of Expo, elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools are invited to explore what engineering involves by participating in mini-competitions. The purpose of these competitions is to allow students from all grades to get a taste of what scientists and engineers do on a daily basis.

Yaniv and Trista are preparing the students (along with our teachers) by simulating these competitions in our classrooms, introducing the students to key ideas and enabling them to practice meeting challenges posed by the competitions which include:

Earthquake Engineering: Teams construct the tallest tower that can withstand a simulated earthquake.

Penny Barges: Teams design a boat out of aluminum foil that can hold the most pennies. Teams get a fixed number of attempts.

The photos in this issue show our students prepping for the Earthquake engineering competition using toothpicks and putty.  Working in teams (like real engineers), students first sketched their ideas, and then tried building them.  No two teams' structures looked alike!

Be an MJCDS Ambassador

Research shows that word of mouth and the work of current parents to spread the word about their positive experiences with Jewish day school is the most effective way to attract new students.  What can you do to help?

*Hang MJCDS informational flyers in all your favorite public spaces.

*Talk to your friends about MJCDS

*Be in touch with Rabbi Rebecca if there is anyone you know that would appreciate an invitation to take a tour of the school.

UW sociology professor Chad Goldberg leads a three-part series exploring the themes in his forthcoming book, Modernity & the Jews in Social Theory. Is being Jewish in America countercultural?  Or, in some ways are Jews the archetypical achievers of the American Dream?  Are Jews the vanguard of modernity, or the quintessential traditionalists? Participants will read selections from key social thinkers and examine why Jews played such a key role for theorists trying to understand what it meant to be French, German or American in modern times.
