MJCDS Maggid

the weekly newsletter of

 Madison Jewish Community Day School

Shalom!
The students are hiding!  Can you find them in this issue of the Maggid?

Above, fifth-grader Ilana captured a colorful moment at our recent Tu Bishvat seder, her friends peeking out from behind the dates and tissue paper flowers.

Below, K-1 students explored the idea of hiding that is found in the Purim story by learning how animals hide themselves for protection in their habitats.

Finally, don't miss the fourth and fifth grade class's original prayer composition inspired by its study of Bircat Hamazon, the prayer of thanks we recite each day after lunch.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Rebecca

Volunteer at the Community Purim Carnival
Sunday, February 24, 11:30am - 2:00pm, Temple Beth El
MJCDS volunteers are needed to staff the Basketball for Big Kids station at this year's community Purim Carnival.  Our school is responsible for making sure this station has adequate coverage.  We need two adults for two shifts each: 12-1 and 1-2. Please click http://bit.ly/UFq2JA to volunteer!
Torah for your Table by Grades 4-5
Students in grades four and five have been studying the text of Bircat Hamazon, the grace after meals.  Students sing this spirited (and lengthy) prayer after lunch each day, and the fourth and fifth graders have been striving to gain a better understanding of the meaning of the words they have long sung by rote.

Inspired by this learning, the students composed their own version of Bircat Hamazon, in Hebrew and in English.  They also created an illuminated version of the text, which Morah Clara plans to laminate so that it can be safely used on a table with food!

Here is their pithy and heartfelt prayer, which we plan to use from time to time at school after we eat.

Thank you God for the food you give to us and to all the creatures in the world.
We say thank you from the day we are born until we die.  We praise God forever and ever.

תודה השם על האוכל שאתה נותן לנו ולכל הבריות בעולם
אנחנו אומרים תודה מהיום שאנחנו נולדים עד שאנחנו מתים
נהלל את השם לעולם ועד

Purim and Camouflage
In the K-1 classroom, students are learning how on Purim, people dress up in costumes, hiding their real identities in favor of presenting themselves as Mordechai or as Dora the Explorer.

As a complement to this holiday learning, students are studying how animals use camouflage to hide themselves for protection in the jungles and forests of the world.

Here, students camouflaged themselves and their friends!  Can you spot the MJCDS students in these pictures?
