Shalom!
Happy 2013!  When we returned to school on Monday, it felt as though we'd been away for so long!  Students quickly got back into the swing of their studies, which this week included science experiments involving kool-aid, creating Aboriginal instruments, and learning all about Antarctica.

One of the most exciting developments I've noticed in our classrooms this year is an increasingly creative approach to bilingual education. Geri, Marla and Clara coordinate with one another, and creative content and language learning are the result.

For example, this week students in K-3 learned about the water cycle in science---in English and in Hebrew.  They learned a song in both languages that's catchy and helps them to remember the different steps in machzor hamayim (the water cycle). Here's a video link to the the third graders teaching the song to the K-1 class.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Rebecca

From Morah Clara's Facebook feed:

"K-1 class: We're talking about Pharoh's decree to have all Israelite baby boys killed because he feared they might one day become a 5th column.
One K-er says: "Pharoh wasn't very smart, because he created more trouble this way."

"OK," I say to the class, "What would each of you have done in Pharoh's shoes?"
The same student as before says: "I would let all the babies grow up together and play together, so when they grew up they would all share their strengths."...From the mouth of babes...

This Week:  Didgeridoos and Drinking the Kool-aid

Third graders have been learning about the Aborigines of Australia as part of their study of world cultures. They have explored Aboriginal art, music, tools, food, and more in a variety of ways including hands-on activities such as making and decorating their own didgeridoos (musical instruments), throwing a boomerang, and creating animal art in an Aboriginal style.

In the photo, students 'play' their didgeridoos around a 'campfire'.

Fourth and fifth graders had fun exploring the physical science concept of concentration by creating three different solutions of cherry drink mix and water. Students used varying amounts of the mix to create dilute, concentrated, and saturated solutions. In addition to observing a difference in color between the three solutions, students enjoyed using their sense of taste to gain a better understanding of concentration. The dilute solution was definitely not the favorite!   -Morah Geri

Bring Gym Shoes on Thursdays
Next Thursday we begin our physical education class at the YMCA West. The class takes place from 2-3 pm and will be a general gym class.  The children love Coach Brian Kavanaugh, who has taught our students for several years, and they can't wait to get started.

Please make sure that your children wear or bring sneakers.  Children must have appropriate footwear for the gym or they will not be permitted to participate.
