Shalom!
A Chanukkah Candle Fact:  The candlelight in your menorah shouldn't be used for anything other than your enjoyment and publicizing the miracles of the holiday when placed in the window of your house.  For instance, you shouldn't use the Chanukkah candles to light your kitchen as you grate potatoes for latkes.  The light of the candles provides warmth for our spirits, not help for our eyes.

(By contrast, the custom of lighting Shabbat candles came from a real and practical need for light in the home after sundown.  It has since taken on beautiful spiritual meanings as well.)

Fourth and fifth graders studied by candlelight this week as part of Colonial Day.  You can read more below about their day, including how they made their own ink from berries.

Colonial Day for Grades 4-5

On Thursday, fourth and fifth grade students dressed up for Colonial day and had fun learning about the lives of children in the 13 Original Colonies.  The girls worked by candlelight, rewriting some of the Rules of Civility & Decent Behaviour in Company and Conversation with modern English vocabulary and grammar. They also wrote poetry and memorized and recited verses from the New England Primer.

Students used traditional colonial names for the day: Charity (Lena), Hope (Ilana), Love (Lena), Patience (Anna), and Comfort (Zoe). Students referred to Ms. Goldman as "Mother," since learning took place in the home during colonial times.

The girls made their own ink from berries, and they each had a chance to try their hand at writing a letter with a quill and ink in old-fashioned handwriting.

The girls partered up to play a common game from colonial times called Nine Men's Morris(similar to Tic Tac Toe). They also enjoyed playing Penny Farthers (tossing pennies into a hat from various distances) and Cat's Cradle, a game played by looping yarn around the hands.
