MJCDS Maggid

the weekly newsletter of

 Madison Jewish Community Day School

Shalom!
Thanksgiving is a time when American culture and Jewish tradition are in beautiful sync.  Finding ways to count our blessings and eating festive meals--what could be more Jewish than that?

This issue of the Maggid features a photo taken by Ilana Greenspan highlighting a major blessing in her life, her mother.

Also take note of the resources below to participate in the Global Day of Jewish Learning this Sunday.  The theme for this year also happens also to be Blessings.

Finally, we took our annual pre-Thanksgiving trip to Trader Joe's this week.  Thank you to our families for donating funds that students used to purchase food for the needy.  In the above photo, students record and add up their purchases.

I am so thankful to be part of this amazing learning community with our students, teachers, families and friends.  Happy Thanksgiving and Shabbat Shalom!

Photo Wins Honorable Mention

Mazal Tov to fifth-grader Ilana Greenspan, whose photo earned an honorable mention in a national photography contest focused on the themes of blessings and gratitude.

The contest was sponsored by the Jewish Lens, an organization dedicated to helping students explore Jewish values through the medium of photography.

"This is a photo of my Mom with her siddur (Jewish prayerbook)," Ilana explains. "My mom chants Torah often in our synagogue. She shares her love for Torah with all of us by creating beautiful prayer books for us at home to use for our Shabbat.

"My mom is a great leader and role model for all of us. I am grateful for my mother's love."

Yashar Koach as well to artist Kathy Mazur who teaches the Jewish Lens curriculum to our fourth and fifth graders.  She uses both Jewish text and visual media to aid the students in their exploration of Jewish themes.

Exploring Native American Culture

America has always been a land of diversity...even before it was "America." Third grade students have been learning all about the unique cultures of some of the Native American tribes who lived throughout this country long before any European settlers arrived.

Each student researched a tribe from a different geographical region of the country to learn about their way of life. The students took notes about various aspects of their tribes' cultures, such as food, shelter, clothing, the arts, and spiritual beliefs.  Then students used their notes to create beautiful posters featuring the culture of each tribe. Students then met with a partner to compare and contrast the cultures of the tribes they researched.

The students discovered that each tribe had to learn how to survive using the natural resources they had available in their region. Jonathan learned that the Cheyenne, living on the plains, used buffalo skins to create their teepees, while Rory learned that the Navajo of the southwest built their hogans out of packed earth. Jojo discovered that the Shawnee, who had lots of wood available to them, were able to build longhouses in villages that held many people, and Jane learned that the Choctaw of the low-lying areas in the southeast used palmetto thatches and long grasses to cover the walls and roofs of their circular lodges.

Global Day of Jewish Learning
This Sunday, November 18, 300 Jewish communities across the world will join together for the third annual Global Day of Jewish Learning. The theme of this year's Global Day and curriculum is Jewish concepts of blessing and gratitude.

Resources for sharing with your children are below:

  • "You Can Dance" A thought-provoking and humorous animated video on gratitude by Hanan Harchol.
  • NEW Shalom Sesame video, with a "Shehecheyanu" prayer song featuring Grover!
  • This week's parashah focuses on the blessings that Jacob and Esau seek from their father and the very different blessings each receive.  What blessings do family members give to one another every day?  Over a lifetime?  What happens when we hope to receive a blessing from a loved one and they can't fulfill our needs?

Late Fall Walk in Wingra Woods
Sunday, November 25, 1 pm - 2:30 pm
Will you be in town over Thanksgiving? If so, we hope you and your family will join us for a walk in the Arboretum. This will be family friendly, and hopefully we'll have some nice weather! Since most leaves have dropped from the deciduous trees, it's easier to see tree forms and the birds and animals that live in the trees year-round. Meet at the Wingra Springs Parking Lot.  Organized by the Kehillah Committee.  For more information contact Sarah Byer, Trista Warrich or Nancy Brower.
