| Shalom! | |
This week, students focused on the elections, were excited to see a little snow, and finished paintings of the separation of land and water in the creation story using the artistic style of pointillism.
Todah Rabbah to Rabbi Biatch for leading us in song last Friday at Kabbalat Shabbat and for showing us how his accordion works.
Todah Rabbah as well to Sara Lavas, a local meteorologist who came to school to answer students' questions about weather and about how scientists study and predict the weather.
Parent-teacher conferences begin this coming week. Morot Clara, Geri and Marla are very much looking forward to having time with our parents to talk about each child's progress, strengths and goals for the year!
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Rebecca

| Election Day | On Election Day, students in grades 4 and 5, who have been studying the election in recent weeks, visited the polls with Morah Geri and Community Shaliach Yehonatan to observe as Rabbi Rebecca voted.
They examined the posted ballot and learned about unopposed candidates and rules against campaigning at polling sites. It was fun for the students learn alongside Yehonatan, who was similarly curious about the American electoral system!
Meanwhile, back at MJCDS, K-3 students prepared for a schoolwide election. Each student created a candidate, wrote and practiced a speech promoting him or her, and got the polling place ready for business. When the older students returned, students processed into the classroom signing the Star Spangled Banner, led by Josephine. Then the speeches began!
Rory mc'd the event and invited each student to speak on behalf of their candidate. Candidates included Obiwan Kenobi, Kitty, Jaguar, Noam, Morah Marla, Goldfish, and the World. Students then moved to the polling place where they stood in line, signed in, filled out and folded up their secret ballots and received handmade "I voted!" stickers.
A few pictures are below including a wonderful speech by Jojo on behalf of her candidate, Lovie Monkiana!

| Students Meet Mayor and Senator-Elect | Each year at Temple Beth El's Food-a-Rama event, politicians stop by on election day to chat with constituents. This created a great opportunity for our grade 3-5 students to meet Rep. and now Senator-Elect Tammy Baldwin as well as Mayor Paul Soglin. Thanks to both of them for taking the time to chat with MJCDS students.

 | Parshat Chayei Sarah: Rebecca meets Isaac |
Meet Rebecca in this week's Torah portion, Chayei Sarah. In this cartoon from G-dcast, step into a desert oasis and get to know Rebecca as a young girl. What narrator Goldie Goldbloom wants to know is "Are you kind?" As kind as Rebecca, that is.
Bonus questions:
*Isaac relies on first impressions. What kind of behavior makes a good first impression on you?
*Name someone in your life who is exceptionally kind. What kinds of things that they do that lead you to call them kind? |
