| Shalom! | |
Do you think that Avraham was confused when three visitors showed up to tell him he was going to have a son, despite his (and Sarah's) old age?
What experiments can we design using this week's assigned science materials: vinegar, baking soda, and dish soap?
How do pumpkin seeds taste?
Nobel prize winner in physics Isidor I. Rabi once said that his mother didn't ask him what he did at school each day. Instead, she would ask, "Izzy, did you ask a good question today?" That difference, he said, made him a scientist.
This spirit is a key part of MJCDS's educational philosophy: Asking thoughtful questions, feeling secure to voice original ideas, and evaluating possibilities using knowledge and judgment are key to becoming intrepid explorers of our world.
Every day, our children ask such great questions! Morot Marla, Geri and Clara encourage students to develop the ability to formulate interesting paths of inquiry and then to investigate them. In the pictures above and below, take a peek at our students in action, exploring the world one day and one question at a time.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Rebecca

| Torah for Your Table | |
This week's parasha, Vayera, contains the story of the Binding of Isaac. Here are some questions to enrich the conversation at your Shabbat table, courtesy of MJCDS fifth-graders Vered and Anna.
*Avraham speaks to the three strangers as though he is talking to one person. Why does he do this?
*Did Avraham realize that his visitors were manifestations of God?
*Do you think Avraham and Sarah were confused by the news that they were going to have a baby even though they were so old?

| Sandy HaSoofah | All classes had a chance to talk about Sandy, the Super Storm. We learned the Hebrew words for storm (soofah), wind (ruah), waves (galeem), flooding (shitaphon). This also gave the students an opportunity to express their concerns for the people affected by Sandy in a safe environment. Students in grades K-3 also had a chance to study about weather. Students in grades 4-5 even performed an original skit for their younger classmates illustrating various types of extreme weather. |
