| Shalom! | |
In the above photo, a first grader helps a kindergartener learn the names of the books of the Torah in Hebrew. First graders also organized a party this week for the kindergarteners to celebrate their mastery of some of the rules of when to use capital letters and when to use lowercase letters! First graders also take turns leading the calendar routine each day, though I suspect that as the year goes on, their kindergarten classmates will start to be ready to take on these roles as well.
It's a blessing to have the opportunity to learn with classmates of various ages--when we teach something to another person, we learn it on a deeper level. And when we learn together, we form bonds of community.
Shabbat Shalom!

| Project Genesis "Let There Be Light" |
For the next seven weeks, we are exploring Beresheet, the Biblical story of creation, through the world of art and music. Each week, we examine one piece of artwork that corresponds to a specific day of creation. For day one (light) we observed Gustav Klimt's, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer 1907. The children identified the various shapes, mosaic appearance, symbols, and use of gold, orange and yellow. They also pointed out that hints of black appeared in the painting, as well. After that we listened to Palladio by Karl Jenkins (You can listen to it here.) The music started low and deep (reminiscent of a darkness), and built to a higher crescendo (allusions to light). With those concepts in mind, the children used their own blank canvas to "create" light. Our field trip to the Chazen art museum this week was extraordinary, and complimented this art/music/Judaic venture. Our fabulous docent, Karen, tailored our visit to enhance our Beresheet appreciation and observation of artwork. Not only did we view specific works of art representing the Torah, we also viewed artwork that captured the essence of using light. The various observations from the kindergarten thru fifth graders were truly stellar! Todah Rabbah to our guide and teacher Karen Ostrov!

| Torah for Your Table | |
This week's parasha, Lech Lecha contains the story of Abraham and Sarah and their journey. Here are some questions to enrich the conversation at your Shabbat table:
*Why do you think God changes the names of Sarah and Abraham? What is the impact of changing your name? (These questions come courtesy of the G-dcast website, http://www.g-dcast.com/lech-lecha.)
*How would you feel if you were in Avraham's shoes? (Morah Clara) |

The full schedule with times and dates and additional details can be found on the website www.wisconsinbookfestival.org.
Community Tot Shabbat 9:30am Saturday, Oct. 27 The first "travelling" community tot Shabbat this year will be at Congregation Shaarei Shamayim. This service is best for children ages 0-5.
