Did you know that swimming class is part of Jewish studies at MJCDS?
The rabbis taught that parents are obligated to teach their children Torah, a trade, and how to do the backfloat.
Through the rabbis weren't actually specific about the crawl versus the sidestroke, they were clear that children's lives could depend someday on these skills. Therefore, swimming--which we do every Friday in the fall--can be categorized as both physical education and Jewish studies!
This week, I have been preparing program summaries for Coffee and Curriculum night this Monday. I have been working subject by subject, listing units and topics of study.
But one of the special things about our school is that our educators work together to create connections across the curriculum. Recent and upcoming lessons include:
*Math/Judaics (creating sukkot using patterns of cubes and links in the K-1 classroom last week),
*Music/Social Studies (songs about the American revolution coming soon for 4-5s), and
*Math/Hebrew/Nature/Language Arts (students collected leaves in the Arboretum, sorted them by color, and practiced color words in both Hebrew and English)
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Rebecca

| Torah for Your Table | |
Talking Torah at your Shabbat Table
As part of their Judaic studies, students at MJCDS learn about Parashat HaShavua, the weekly Torah portion. This coming Shabbat we begin the Torah reading cycle again by reading the very first words and chapters of the Torah.
You can help your children reflect on their studies and engage in meaningful conversation as a family by talking about Torah each Friday night. There are any number of resources available to help spur discussion at your table, and we will be highlighting some of them here in this and future issues of the Maggid.
This week we draw your attention to a blog written by Rabbi Eytan Kenter in Atlanta, Georgia. Click here to read Rabbi Kenter's discussion questions on the parasha, divided by grade level.

| "Talking Spirits" of the Civil War; UW Space Place |

Wednesday, 4th/5th graders traveled to Forest Hill Cemetery for a field trip put on by the Wisconsin Veterans' Museum called "Talking Spirits: Voices of the Civil War." Local actors, dressed in Civil War uniforms or period clothing told first person narratives of some of the notable participants in the Civil War from Wisconsin. Students will be studying the Civil War later this semester.
Last week, 3rd/4th/5th graders visited UW Space Place to participate in a workshop in which students had the opportunity to use their knowledge of fractions to divide play-dough and create a scale model of the relative size of the planets in our solar system. Students also had a chance to explore the exhibits and artifacts in the space museum.
