The Mexican 'Nightingale' reborn : Local resident writes Angela Peralta opera for Mazatlan stage

"The Dove and the Nightingale" (performed in Mazatlan in Spanish as "La Paloma y el Ruisenor") is the story of Peralta's final days in Mazatlan before her death, a whirlwind of opera tours, an illicit affair and jealous run-ins with her lover's ex-wife.
Peralta, according to Bourland, "wanted to bring opera to her people in Mexico." She led her opera company throughout Mexico, even performing in sand pits.''

Mazatln Council of Public Security wants DWI Fines Increased

''Two weeks ago the Secretary of the Municipal Council of Public Security proposed that Mazatln increase its fine for driving while intoxicated. Renato Ocampo Alcntar, Secretary of the Municipal Council of Public Security, said "We are talking about 100 to 300 minimum wages as is done in Monterrey or Guadalajara. Why, because unfortunately the fine has to hurt in the pocket of the people for them to understand the severity of the offence."

"In Mexico, the 67 percent rise in average Mexican manufacturing wages from 2004 to 2014 was offset by higher productivity and an 11 percent depreciation of the Peso against the U.S. Dollar. The Mexican workforce also has a strong work ethic, as the average Mexican works more hours per year than people in any other member country of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, with fewer labor conflicts.

"The quality and quantity of northern Mexico's solar resources are as good as anywhere in the world. Mexico's best solar thermal resources are in the states of Baja California, Sonora and Chihuahua. Baja California has 5 GW of solar thermal generation capacity, with the potential to generate 11.6 GWhs of solar electricity annually, as the Solar Thermal Resources Inventory undertaken as part of the Western Renewable Energy Zones Project revealed.''

.....that tourists started coming to Mazatlan in the 1930s, mainly for fishing and hunting? Then some hotels appeared along Playa Olas Altas, Mazatln's first tourist beach, in the 1950s. From the 1970s onward, a long strip of modern hotels and tourist facilities has spread north along the coast.

November 7, 2014

Greetings!!

Hurricane Vance made this week exciting. He landed south of us as a depression, but brought around 36 hours of steady rain and caused school to be cancelled one day. Vance was, more than likely, the last hurrah of the hurricane season.

The Golden Zone renovations started this week so be aware of traffic if you are out and about. Jumapam is doing a census of their users so be on the look out for them as well. Other local news includes the municipality making new investments and Canirac is making a gastronomy guide in both Spanish and English.

A lot of events are happening this weekend. The First Friday Art Walk is tonight, the organic market in Plazuela Zaragoza is tomorrow, the Cuauhtemoc is in town and open for tours, and the queen candidates and theme for Carnaval 2015 will be announced!

We will see you next week! If you have any questions or suggestions in the meantime, drop us a line!
