Dear Reader,
Mark your calendars for a schedule change in 2016, and save the date.
The SCJS Annual Meeting and Conference
will be held in the month of JUNE.
Our venue will be the Drury Plaza Hotel in Sante Fe, New Mexico.
Please join us there June 26-28, 2016.
The Call For Papers was recently broadcast to a lengthy list of scholars and scholarly institutions. But, of course, no list can be exhaustive of all potential sources for presenters. Our members' suggestions and referrals throughout the years have helped SCJS connect with researchers, archivists, authors, artists and musicians throughout the world. We ask you, our readers, to help spread the word again by sharing this newsletter with your colleagues, family, and friends. Individual accounts of personal journeys are a high-point of SCJS conferences. Indeed, it is the balanced blend of the academic with the anecdotal that shapes the SCJS conference experience for both attendees and presenters.
The SCJS Board of Directors welcomes Leonard Stein from Beershevah, Israel as the new Conference Program Chairperson. He succeeds Mathew Warshawsky of Portland, Oregon, who held that position for the previous three years.
SCJS members can look forward to learning more about Leonard in the next issue of the full-color print magazine HaLapid, scheduled to be in readers' mailboxes before the end of the year.
Hint and friendly call to action:
If you are receiving this newsletter La Granada via email, please know that upgrading to paid SCJS membership includes FREE receipt of both the HaLapid magazine and the scholarly peer-reviewed Journal of Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian Crypto-Jews. Join now by clicking here.
Information for registration and hotel reservation will be available in the coming months. Please help us spread the word for June 2016 in Sante Fe.
Best Wishes,
Debbie

A Note from the Editor's Bookshelf ~
Historical Fiction is a literary genre that blurs the lines between fact and imagination. Readers are invited to pretend as if the story could actually have taken place within the context of evidence-based settings. Time and place are authentically portrayed. The narrative feels real, as if the characters of the story actually engaged in the actions and dialogues portrayed. Yet, we know that much of the book's drama has actually emerged from the author's imagination.
Based upon research of an era's social customs, political environment, and other verified types of factual information, the author creates fictional characters who might have co-existed and even interacted with known historical figures. Universal themes of human behavior begin to emerge.
Details of daily living experiences offer the reader a chance to also imagine what it might have been like to live during a particular historical period. Treat yourself to a journey in time and place from the comfort of your own reading chair.
