Beasley is an adoptable dog from Be Fido's Friend.
Can we just say how tired we are of talking (complaining, moaning, whining) about the weather? We'd all be pretty happy if we never saw another pair of salt-stained, muddy boots again. But the days are finally
getting longer! Don't forget to set
your clocks ahead one hour on Sunday, March 9.

One of the nice things about March is that the event season begins to heat up again - fans of ALIVE Rescue will finally make it into the freezing water of Lake Michigan for their annual Shelter Shiver on March 9, and our friends at One Tail at a Time and Be Fido's Friend have a full schedule of adoption events on tap. And for those of you who run as part of a shelter or rescue team at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon - registration begins March 19!

But by far the best thing that has happened this month is that on
March 5 the Chicago City Council voted 49-1 to make the retail sale of commercially bred dogs, cats, and rabbits in Chicago a thing of the past. Under this ordinance, spearheaded by City Clerk Susana Mendoza, retail pet stores in Chicago will no longer be able to sell dogs, cats, or rabbits unless those animals are sourced from humane sources such as animal shelters or rescue organizations. Big woofs to Ms Mendoza, the 49 righteous aldermen who voted "yes", and our friends at The Puppy Mill Project for helping make this ordinance a reality!

Best wishes from the AnimalSense Gang!
Client Spotlight: Porter

AnimalSense loves our clients so much that we want to share their awesomeness with you. We're profiling them in our newsletters, on our website, and through our social media channels. So, keep an eye out for your dog, who could be in the spotlight next!

Porter the puppy (photo courtesy of his humans, Jeremy and Paula)

Porter is a four month old lab mix puppy from Senior Trainer Nicole Stewart's Puppy Elementary class in Glenview.

How did your dog come to be a part of your family? Sadly, we lost our last puppy McCoy at just under six months old. He was born with a terminal heart condition the adoption agency missed. We enjoyed each day with him until his passing. We learned of a litter of 14 puppies and after meeting Porter we knew he was a survivor. The mother was a black lab that

came in as a pregnant rescue. They had no information about the father.

What are you hoping to achieve by training? We are hoping for a solid foundation that will help us grow and develop with Porter through his puppy phases and adulthood.

What's the most valuable thing you've learned in class so far?

Nicole has shown us how Porter lives in the moment: Action...Treat...Good!

What's your dog's favorite part of class? Porter loves when he is used as the "example". He still can't tell that sometimes he is doing the wrong behavior, he just loves all the attention.

Give us one (or more) fun facts about your dog. He's a fantastic snuggler, loves being challenged, likes climbing over extra-large mounds of snow, and will do anything for a treat!

Junior Trainer Michelle Hoff
Michelle Hoff with Leelu (aka NoodleButt)

Please join us in welcoming Michelle Hoff to the AnimalSense family as a Junior Trainer!  Michelle was born and raised in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Her first dogs were Cody, a German Shepherd/Chow Chow mix, and Trapper, a Doberman Pinscher.

As an adult, she ended up falling in love with a boxer, Leelu, that she successfully trained on her own. The fun she had training and learning from Leelu inspired her to want to become a dog trainer. After researching career training options, she discovered CanineLink, where she learned about dog behavior as well as training techniques. The in-depth training and knowledge she gained at CanineLink made her a natural for the AnimalSense team!

Her dog Leelu is now 3 years old and the wiggliest boxer ever, which has earned her the family nickname of NoodleButt.
