When Your Dog Gets Into an Accident

As pet owners we try to take every precaution to keep our beloved animals happy, healthy, and safe, so when something happens it's hard not to feel like we have let them down.

Trainer Allison Kao Joins AnimalSense

Our new Junior Trainer, Allison Kao, has been working in the animal training field since 2008. She has worked with and trained a variety of species at different institutions and

Allison with Dexter and Delilah

organizations, including the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the Pueblo Zoo, the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Shedd Aquarium, and Canine Companions for Independence. Allison has a passion for all animals, but she really became interested in dog behavior and training after adopting her second dog, Delilah.

"One of the most important things I learned while training giraffes is that a good trainer always considers the advice of others. That's one of the things that really excites me about joining AnimalSense - the best way to learn is to surround yourself with great trainers!"

Allison credits her dog Delilah, who suffers from separation anxiety and is highly reactive on walks, with opening up a whole new world of dog behavior. Allison feels that working with Delilah through her reactivity issues by using positive reinforcement has made her a better trainer.

"I feel that every species of animal can have its own training challenges, and therefore the more species you work with the better trainer you become. Working with both dogs and humans will make me a better trainer. I hope to one day be able to be able to take part in rehabilitating "problem" dogs so that they can find loving homes."

Allison's favorite behavior to teach is eye contact. "Eye contact is one of the strongest tools an animal trainer can have. Many people take it for granted because most dogs have no problem with this. But when you are working with a fearful or shy dog, or even an exotic animal, gaining that animal's trust to the point where they are comfortable enough to look you in the eyes is an amazing feeling."

Bonding Through Training

AnimalSense loves our clients so much that we want to share their awesomeness with you. We're profiling them in our newsletters, on our website and through our social media channels. So, keep an eye out for your dog, who could be in the spotlight next!

Kai with Marsha and Kate

Kai (Hawaiian for "ocean) is a 4.5 year old Australian Cattle Dog/Miniature Schnauzer/German Shepherd mix (or, as her moms Kate and Marsha

call her, an Australian Shepauzer).

How did your dog come to be a part of your family?

After our last dog passed, we decided to adopt an adult rescue. Kai was transported to Second City Canine Rescue from a no- kill shelter in Oklahoma, where she had lived for four years after having a litter. The litter was adopted, but she never had a forever home. We couldn't resist her ears and her story.

What are you hoping to achieve by training?

Gain better communication and bonding with Kai.  She has mild anxiety from living in a shelter for so long and we'd love to be able to have her know how to relax and just be a dog, as well as to get along with our two kittens.

What's the most valuable thing you've learned in class so far?

How to work with Kai from where she's at. The positive reinforcement techniques are great. Kai is super treat motivated and a great learner, and it's wonderful to see how she catches on.

What is Kai's favorite part of class?

Kai loves receiving treats. But, perhaps more than that, she loves all the wonderfully loving attention from the trainers.
