Greetings!

Do you ever wish your dog wasn't a dog? That may seem absurd, but if you think about it, we often set unrealistic expectations for our dogs' behavior. In Trainer Andrea Obey's blog series Great Expectations, she is exploring different situations where we may set the bar too high for our dogs. After all, who wouldn't want a naughty puppy transformed to nice dog in just a matter of weeks?

Training is a great way to understand dog behavior and work on a symbiotic relationship with your dog. If your dog's focus, leash manners and overall behavior could use some sprucing up for fall, sign up for one of our many offerings during our upcoming Fall session. Classes start in October, so sign up today to secure your spot.

Don't see a class offered in your area yet? We'll come to you! Check out our in-home Private Training packages offered seven days a week to fit your schedule.

From Africa to AnimalSense

Our new Senior Trainer, Sarah Tulicki, bring years of dog training experience and recently returned from a month-long trip to Africa, where she volunteered at a wildlife sanctuary.

"I learned a lot in Africa, about the world and about myself, but the most important thing would be that as an animal lover, we often think about the animals, their health, welfare, and happiness and we forget about the human side of things," said Sarah. She says the same goes for dog training. "It's not just about the dog, it's about the people too.Training should be about the human-canine bond and working together. The focus shouldn't be the dog's mistakes or the human's misunderstandings."

Sarah enjoys working with shy and/or fearful dogs and is the parent of two shy dogs herself, so she can easily relate. "I love to see a dog come out of its shell and relax or become happy to see people it was once reserved around. I feel like that changes that dog and pet parent's life more than learning how to sit does. It can be a very stressful thing when all you want is to make your dog comfortable, but you don't know how," said Sarah.

Sarah will be teaching classes on Saturdays in Old Town during our Fall session.
Our New Addition

It's our pleasure to introduce you to the newest member of our AnimalSense family:
Amelia Elizabeth Schneider. She joined us on September 14, 2013 at 6 pounds, 8 ounces. Mom Erin, Dad Jim and Sister Bailey are in love!

Underbite = Love at First Sight

AnimalSense loves our clients so much that we want to share their awesomeness with you. We're profiling them in our newsletters, on our website and through our social media channels. So, keep an eye out for your dog, who could be in the spotlight next!

Simon
Meet Simon, a rescue from PAWS Chicago. His mom Jackie said when she saw those teeth, she knew he had to be hers. Simon now uses those teeth to eviscerate small stuffed animals. He runs around with them, and then finds a way to rip it apart and pull out all the fluff! Here's more about Simon from Jackie:

What are you hoping to achieve by training?

We have been working hard since I adopted him in January.  Basic training, but also reactivity to other dogs. Through class and lots of work on down time, he has gotten better and better!  I love seeing improvements, both big and small, and have seen a lot lately! I love to see his confidence build up, and his anxiety drop.

What's the most valuable thing you've learned in class so far?

It's amazing to see his nosework!  Although his underbite is adorable, I feel that it stops him from using his natural instinct to find with his nose. I am so happy to see that he loves to do it, and is quite successful at it!

What's your dog's favorite part of class?

Everyone probably says this, but it's the treats. He is picky, so not just any treat will do. I save the special ones for training purposes, and he works really hard for them!
