Energy Efficiency Keeps Multifamily Housing Affordable

The Energy Network Multifamily program is making strides within affordable housing

Improving energy efficiency in affordable housing is a key priority for The Energy Network Multifamily rebate program. By engaging affordable housing developers, public housing authorities, and others, we're bringing energy retrofits to dozens of buildings-and thousands of low-income tenants-across Southern California.

As of March 2016, the Multifamily program has enrolled 33 affordable housing projects totaling 2,652 multifamily units. We are proud to have enrolled projects across The Energy Network territory, from Tulare and San Bernardino counties to Ventura, Los Angeles, and Orange counties. A range of cost-effective energy improvements to these properties will achieve an estimated energy savings of 2,282,015 kWh of electricity and 65,731 therms of natural gas each year.

Energy retrofits contribute to the sustainability of affordable housing. Lowering utility costs helps property owners keep housing affordable for their tenants, and economically viable for themselves. It also allows them to revitalize often older buildings for the benefit of their tenants. The Energy Network  is proud to offer incentives and technical consulting that benefits our environment and keeps housing more affordable in Southern California.

Spring Clean Your Way to Energy Savings!

Improving energy efficiency in schools helps to create a healthier and safer environment -- an environment where students and teachers can thrive. Interior and exterior lighting retrofits can enhance teacher and student security while mechanical retrofits can reduce student sick days due to improved air quality.

Knowing this, Orange Unified School District (OUSD) is undergoing a major 'spring cleaning' by prepping 27 schools throughout 4 different cities for both lighting and mechanical energy efficient upgrades. Over 20,000 students throughout OUSD's elementary, middle and high schools will benefit from these improvements.

OUSD's project is a true example of collaboration as the District has teamed up with 3 different consulting firms to deliver a comprehensive project, funded by Prop 39 and utility incentives, that will save millions in both energy and money.

OUSD school sites

The District is utilizing consultants under The Energy Network, the PREPPS program and Anaheim Public Utilities to conduct audits at no cost to the agency on aging and outdated facilities. Once the audits are complete and the scope of works defined, OUSD will leverage two energy service companies to implement the projects.

In addition to conducting, preparing and delivering the audits, The Energy Network also developed the scope of work documents needed to move forward on the various projects. OUSD is also leveraging the Program to apply for incentives and prepare their Energy Expenditure Plan for California Energy Commission's review and reward of Prop 39 funds for the projects.

Working together, OUSD's project team was able to complete the audit reports for all 27 sites in just under 7 weeks and immediately went to work to obtain and ultimately receive Board of Education approval. Once construction is complete, this 'spring cleaning' is expected to save OUSD over 1.5 million kWh in energy savings.

According to the Department of Energy, school districts in the US spend more than $6 billion per year on energy - more than computers and textbooks combined. As much as 30 percent of a district's total energy is used inefficiently or unnecessarily. By being more energy efficient, schools can save money, help prevent greenhouse gas emissions AND improve their students'
learning environment.
