Streetlight Retrofitting: Efficiency Made Easy

Replacing city streetlights is one of the most rewarding energy upgrades that a city can make to reduce its energy consumption, but it comes with significant challenges. When the city of Arcadia first began plans to replace their city-owned streetlights they quickly realized how problematic the process was. Despite the City's commitment to upgrade their streetlights, lack of funding proved to be a big obstacle, and it ultimately prevented the project from moving forward as Arcadia simply did not have enough resources to implement city-wide street light retrofits cost-effectively.

Working in collaboration with the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (SGVCOG), The Energy Network was able to step in and complete the City's brand new, energy efficient LED street lighting retrofit in just 11 months.

The Energy Network assisted Arcadia with obtaining financing and was able to capture $58,532 in utility incentives, and secure $319,096 at 0% interest, through On-Bill financing. But the extent of The Energy Network's services does not end there. From conducting a full-scale audit and technical review to developing a scope of work and helping the City select a contractor, The Energy Network was there to assist at every step of the process - all at no cost to the city!

When planning for construction, The Energy Network helped the City access competitively selected contractors through the National Joint Powers Alliance (NJPA) - eliminating the usual lengthy process of having to prepare RFPs and go out to bid - which allowed for the LED upgrade of all the proposed streetlights to be completed in under four months.

By enrolling with The Energy Network, the City of Arcadia was able to retrofit 810 streetlights with brand-new energy efficient LED systems. The new lighting is expected to save the City 435,521 kWh and $52,262 annually. If the City had gone through with this project unassisted, it would have cost nearly $400,000 out of pocket - but by identifying appropriate financing options with The Energy Network's guidance, the City ended up paying 1/100th of that price!

Educating Homeowners at Community Events

As part of its goal to provide education and outreach, The Energy Network participates in community events across southern California, helping homeowners understand how energy efficiency can make a difference in their home. We also partner with local organizations to ensure The Energy Network's information is available at events, even when The Energy Network's staff can't be on hand.

In 2015 alone, The Energy Network has participated in more than 35 events, reaching more than 4,000 individuals with energy efficiency information.

'Presenting' More Opportunities to Learn About Commercial PACE

The Los Angeles County Commercial PACE program is continuing to help contractors add value to their commercial projects by conducting county-wide presentations on how Commercial PACE can fund building performance upgrades, continue projects that may have stalled due to lack of available funding, and expand a contractor's client base. On September 30, select contractors will be attending a workshop hosted by The Energy Network at the dusitD2 Hotel Constance Pasadena. Contractors will learn about securing financing for projects through the Commercial PACE program and participate in a short, guided tour of the hotel where a current PACE investor will discuss the hotel's many energy efficiency improvements.

The dusitD2 Hotel Constance Pasadena is the site of a successfully-financed, $6.8 million Commercial PACE project completed in 2014. Energy efficient renovations including HVAC equipment, LED lighting, and elevator controls transformed the former Constance Hotel into the current, green-friendly dusitD2.
