Home Tour Promotes Culver City's 100 Healthy Homes Goal

The Energy Network organized a home tour this month in partnership with the Culver City 100 Healthy Homes Campaign so that local residents could get a "real-life" look at the benefits of Home Upgrade energy efficiency improvements. More than 65 residents took the opportunity to walk through the 1940 Culver City home and view the various measures that had been installed, including wall insulation, air conditioner, and windows. Other green improvements included drought tolerant landscaping, drip irrigation, and low flow showerheads and faucets.

Opening the door for energy efficiency: Local residents toured a 1940 Culver City home, heard from the owners about the benefits of energy efficient upgrades and learned how to become part of the city's 100 Healthy Homes goal.

Tour visitors were given a map of the home which pinpointed the home's upgrades. Photos each of the measures were included on signage so that visitors could see what they looked like, even if they were not immediately visible (such as attic insulation). The home's owners were also available to answer questions about their efficiency upgrade experience and Program Representatives provided information and flyers on how to get started with the Home Upgrade process.

Visitors concluded their tour with refreshments and a simple, three-question quiz which confirmed the most important message from the event: Home Upgrade rebates can help residents take the next step toward more comfortable, healthy living.
Summer Savings-
Had Me A Blast!

As the summer months come to an end, public agency community centers tend to rejoice at the thought of lower energy bills - but The County of Los Angeles (LAC) has been celebrating all summer long. As of June, LAC has completed pool pump retrofit projects at 13 of their facilities - for a savings of more than 730 thousand kWh and over $95,000 per year.

After enrolling in the program in 2013, The Energy Network and the County's Parks and Recreation Department worked together to identify a crucial inefficiency at their community pools - filtration pumps were running at full power even when the pools were unoccupied. Moreover, pool filtration pumps accounted for an average of 27% of total energy use. The Energy Network's solution: install new pumps to help regulate pump speed to reduce energy demand when the pool is unoccupied and reap the savings!

In addition to identifying the mechanical energy saving measures, The Energy Network also identified an opportunity for lighting saving measures at 15 different facilities. To date, LAC Parks and Rec has received board approval to complete another project for pool pump retrofits at 6 additional facilities along with all 15 lighting projects - bringing LAC's total estimated savings to over 1.1 million kWh and more than $200,000 per year.

By enrolling in The Energy Network and taking action on recommended energy efficiency measures, LAC Parks and Rec is positioning itself as a community leader - AND enjoying lower energy bills.

Working Together to Complete Bigger and Better Projects

When The City of Barstow joined The Energy Network in 2014, their Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), which provides primary and secondary treatment for about 2.2 million gallons of raw sewage per day, was in the process of undergoing upgrades as part of their overall ongoing plant maintenance strategy. Being certain not to disturb - but to enhance the positive actions the agency was already taking, The Energy Network worked alongside the City to identify 5 additional opportunities for mechanical energy upgrades at their WWTP - all of which could easily be incorporated into projects they already had underway.

The City decided to move forward with 4 of the recommendations including the installation of diffusers and retrofits of various pumps. By choosing to piggyback these energy saving measures on top of their routine upgrades, the City was able to complete all projects by April 2015 for an estimated savings of more than 400 thousand kWh and over $43,000 per year. Moreover, the City was able to secure almost $17,000 in rebates for their upgrades and it is estimated that they received over $76,000 in free services by working with The Energy Network. In addition to reduced energy costs, the projects also provided the City's WWTP with an opportunity to modernize outdated equipment and improve reliability.

"What differentiates The Energy Network from other energy efficiency programs in California is the comprehensive, holistic approach water and wastewater systems operation, with a focus on process-based energy management. Throughout the process, The Energy Network has involved the Investor-Owned Utilities and other institutional partners at the most important junctures to ensure the maximum benefit for our facilities. Overall, The Energy Network has been an effective and valuable partner in helping our agency fulfill its energy reduction and water conservation goals."
-Kody Tompkins, Chief Plant Operator, City of Barstow WWTP
