Crouching Diver, Hidden Savings

In September 2014, The City of Mission Viejo enrolled in The Energy Network to obtain expert technical support to inform its decision to install a replacement boiler at the city's Marguerite Aquatics Center, home to one of the largest swimming and diving clubs in the United States.

By utilizing The Energy Network's Comparative Energy Analysis service, the City not only received tailored services, including a Whole Building Mechanical Audit, for the new boiler at its Aquatics Center, but also recommendations and support for additional projects to benefit the agency and its constituents. The city also decided to complete other projects, including installing VFDs (pool pumps) at the Aquatic Center, implementing gas-saving measures at the Mission Viejo Library and retrofitting roughly 350 of the city's streetlights. The boilers replacements will yield an estimated 14,000 therm savings and will provide the City with a rebate of $7,200 (to date) with additional monetary incentives in the pipeline for the VFDs.

As for the Library, The Energy Network conducted a comparative energy analysis and was able to conclude that gas-use at the City's library facility was exceptionally high for its size and subsequently recommended an audit. After The Energy Network conducted a preliminary site walk, it identified four additional gas saving measures. The City will save an additional estimated 23,882 therms as well as receive a monetary rebate at an estimated $10,300. The Library project is scheduled to be completed in July 2015.

Perks of Participating with
The Energy Network

Contractors have received an average incentive of $2,400 per Home Upgrade project, and almost $400,000 have been disbursed through Contractor Co-op funds.

Contractor Spotlight:
Alps Air Conditioning
and Heating

Boosting sales with Home Upgrade: Alps Air Conditioning and Heating is based in Anaheim and works throughout the Los Angeles & Orange County area.

Since the launch of Energy Upgrade CaliforniaŽ Home Upgrade, The Energy Network has initiated a number of recruitment efforts to enroll eligible contractors to participate in the program.

One such valued contractor is Alps Air Conditioning and Heating. Alps has been actively engaged with its Account Manager at The Energy Network to take advantage of Co-op marketing, which it uses to create auto wraps that promote its participation in Home Upgrade. After slightly modifying its business model to accommodate rebate processing, Alps has continued to use Home Upgrade as a sales tool for homeowners who are interested in investing in quality, energy efficient HVAC equipment.

"Home Upgrade has added a new market of homeowners to our customer base," said Joey Gibellino, Project Manager. "Customers are more inclined to choose energy efficient products when offered rebates to help offset the cost of purchase."

Home Upgrade is a largely contractor-driven program and participating contractors like Alps Air Conditioning and Heating contribute valuable efforts that continue to increase project numbers and help California homeowners become more energy efficient.
