Homeowner Workshops Presented in Santa Clarita and Culver City

Lights, Camera, Energy Savings! (l-r) Laura Jardine, Project Technician, City of Santa Clarita Environmental Services Division, Sam Robinson, Program Representative for The Energy Network, and Dave Caldwell and Tami Edwards, hosts of SCV Today on SCV-TV Santa Clarita discuss Home Upgrade rebate benefits.

The Energy Network is hosting homeowner workshops in Santa Clarita and Culver City to help residents learn about Home Upgrade, rebates, and financing. Attendees will enjoy free refreshments and prizes, meet local Energy Upgrade CaliforniaŽ Participating Contractors, and walk away knowing how to get started with an energy upgrade in their home. In addition, Lunch & Learn workshops will be sponsored in both cities to encourage City employees to upgrade their own homes and spread the word.

The Home Upgrade team is working with highly motivated and community-connected champions in each city.  Promotional advertisements and information about the workshops has spread through various City channels, including Santa Clarita's Spring Residential Trash Hauler Newsletter, Culver City's Crossroads blog, and local media outlets.  Home Upgrade was even featured on SCV This Morning, a popular television show on SCV-TV. These champions and The Energy Network are working on yearlong media plans with several outlets, whose owners and spokespeople are personally enthusiastic about energy efficiency, and interested in upgrading their own homes.

Under the tagline, "More comfort, efficiency, and savings...all under your roof," the workshops will be held on Friday, Feb. 20, Wednesday, Feb. 25, and Thursday, Mar. 19 in Santa Clarita, and on Wednesday, Mar. 18 in Culver City.

First NJPA Streetlight Projects Debut

Upgrading high-pressure sodium or metal halide streetlights with light-emitting diode (LEDs) translates to big benefits for public agencies who own their streetlights. LEDs consume 50-70% less energy than traditional streetlights - and this energy savings results in reduced operating costs, less ongoing maintenance, lower emissions and even eligibility for utility rebates. In addition to cost and energy savings, citizens benefit from the increased safety and improved visibility that LED streetlights bring to their neighborhood.

The Energy Network recently completed two streetlight retrofit projects using the program's Turnkey Project Delivery service which offers an expedited construction procurement process that allows agencies to receive transparent, itemized pricing, and identification of financing opportunities.

Whereas a typical energy efficiency retrofit project takes 9 to 16 months to get to construction, The Energy Network program can cut the time by as much as half using a procurement process specifically designed to fast-track energy efficiency retrofits. A pool of highly qualified regional mechanical and electrical contractors have already been selected by the National Joint Powers Alliance (NJPA) through a public competitive bidding process. The pricing is transparent, detailed and known up front which avoids the need to use the typical design-bid-award process which can be very lengthy.

In May 2014, The City of Orange kicked-off a project alongside The Energy Network to retrofit 200 HPS streetlights to LED's using The Energy Network's Turnkey Project Delivery process.

Audits were completed in July, construction began in October and final incentive approval was received in November.  The project took just seven months from start to finish and this retrofit helped the agency realize 124,640 kWh in energy savings, which was 1,500 kWh more than originally estimated.

In February 2014, The City of Arcadia also enlisted The Energy Network to provide a cost-effective, fast and turnkey approach to their streetlight retrofit projects. To meet these needs, The Energy Network's experts collaborated with SCE, leveraged local resources, provided technical support and applied for incentives and On-Bill Financing (OBF) while providing customized support using the Turnkey Project Delivery process. Additionally, the City of Arcadia received a green light from SCE for $322,000 of reserved funding in OBF and $61,000 in incentives. This funding allowed the City to retrofit of 810 cobraheads in just eleven months resulting in approximately 435,000 kWh savings annually.

Fast, transparent and cost effective - The Energy Network's turnkey project delivery services are bringing expedited street lighting upgrades to Southern California public agencies.

Moreno Valley Electric Joins The Energy Network to Tackle Energy Efficiency Challenges

A testament to the value of The Energy Network's model in action, a Memorandum of Understanding was executed in late 2014 allowing municipal utility, Moreno Valley Electric Utility (MVU), to leverage The Energy Network's offerings for energy efficiency retrofits on a fee-for-service basis.

The Energy Network began working with the City of Moreno Valley on lighting and mechanical retrofits in 2013. After the value of the The Energy Network model was demonstrated to the City, Moreno Valley identified four additional facilities with energy efficiency upgrade potential, although at the time, there was no effective way to implement the much needed retrofits since the city had limited staff capacity, experience with energy efficiency projects, and expertise about the utility incentive process.

The Energy Network stepped in to find a solution and by working collaboratively with the City and LA County, was able to draft and execute an MOU to utilize The Energy Network's technical and project management services.

In December 2014, The Energy Network hosted audit kick-off meetings and site surveys for the four MVU-serviced facilities. In the first quarter of 2015, The Energy Network will deliver a comprehensive audit on each of the four facilities - helping Moreno Valley to address some of their highest level-use facilities and working together to achieve energy efficiency.
