$6.8 Million PACE Funded Hotel Retrofit in Pasadena

A $6.8 million bond through the Los Angeles County Commercial PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) program, implemented by The Energy Network, recently financed the energy efficiency component of a full scale renovation of the dusitD2 constance pasadena hotel in downtown Pasadena, CA. The hotel used PACE for comprehensive energy efficiency improvements that included new heating and air-conditioning equipment, LED lighting, elevator motors and controls, a water system overhaul, and insulation. As a result of the improvements funded through Commercial PACE, the property will reduce its electricity use by over 200,000 kWh and water consumption by an estimated 3.2 million gallons annually. K2 Clean Energy Capital played an integral part educating the building owner about PACE, helping determine the scope of improvements, and speeding up the approval process. Jonathan Pickering, co-founder of K2 Clean Energy Capital, said "This project represents the true spirit of the PACE program in updating an old commercial building and vastly improving the infrastructure to meet and beat current energy efficiency standards."

PACE is 100%, long-term, fixed-rate financing repaid through a property tax assessment attached to a building. The Los Angeles County Commercial PACE program has funded five projects to date, for a total of more than $14 million in energy efficiency improvements. This represents a significant portion of the nationwide PACE market, which totals more than $83 million. To learn more about Los Angeles County Commercial PACE, visit www.lapace.org.

Introducing Contractor Co-op

Beginning January 2015, The Energy Network will introduce three new ways that home performance contractors can apply for Matching Funds to help grow their business. Through Contractor Co-op, eligible Home Upgrade Participating Contractors will have the option to use up to $5,000 in Matching Funds in 2015 for:

  • Training and Certifications
  • Equipment Purchases
  • Equipment Calibration
  • Marketing

The 2013-2014 Co-op Marketing program cycle came to an end with more than $213,000 in matching funds disbursed, in addition to more than $350,000 disbursed under the Recovery Act era of the program. Although 2014 funds were fully spent across 44 Participating Contractors, The Energy Network wanted to find a way to continue the program in 2015 while supporting an even larger number of contractors. Contractor feedback has consistently indicated a need for Home Upgrade equipment and training, and Contractor Co-op aims offer that flexibility and meet the business needs of even more home performance businesses.

Do you know a contractor interested in growing their business in home performance who may want to participate? Learn more online, or have them contact us at coopmarketing@theenergynetwork.com or call (877) 785-2237 for more information.

Educate & Engage -  Workshops for Public Agencies
Aaron Klemm of Los Angeles County speaking at The Energy Network's Street Lighting Workshop 12/4/14
Nearly two hundred California public agency representatives, utility partners and community collaborators joined The Energy Network's Workshops on Financing, The Water-Energy Nexus and Street Lighting in the final quarter of 2014.

The workshops provided an opportunity for attendees to review real-world projects including planning, implementation, successes and challenges.

As a result of the recent workshops, The City of Long Beach is now looking to work with The Energy Network to retrofit over 20,000 of their streetlights and several new agencies are looking to enroll in the program.
