Bill's Book Group For Guys

Bookseller Recommendations!
William Recommends:
Girl Waits With Gun by Amy Stewart
Fans of Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs novels will adore this new mystery, the first in a prospective series based on a real lady detective named Constance Copp.  In this first adventure, set in 1914 New York, the Copp sisters are traveling in their buggy when they are struck by an automobile driven by a dye factory heir, a violent man who sets out to harass the women on their farm.  A fun historical mystery based on fact; this is a crisply-paced, humorous read that will enthrall mystery fans.

Marilyn Recommends:
How's Your Faith? by David Gregory
The author (an NBC newsman and a moderator on Meet The Press) explores his own faith in the context of being a child of an inter-faith family as well as the child of an alcoholic mother.  He also reflects on his own inter-faith marriage.  I appreciated his honesty and his journalistic approach to the topic of faith, his personal exploration of the subject, and his place within it.

Peter recommends:
The Shepherd's Life by James Rebanks
Rebanks may be the first working shepherd to claim a degree from Oxford University. While he has put his education to great use, his heart and soul are still firmly rooted on his family's land in northern England, where he continues to work the farm every day. He takes us through a year in his life, from the shearing season of the fall, through lambing season in winter, to the auction season in spring, ending with summer when the sheep are turned out to the upland hills.  This is a rich and delightful book, full of the warmth of the summer sun on the high Lake District fells.

Phyllis recommends:
Vintage by David Baker
This is a wonderful adventure for the wine lover and foodie!  This fast paced tale of a washed up food writer following a career-changing story will have your mouth watering as tantalizing leads take him to Burgundy, Alsace-Lorraine, and Moscow. Wonderful descriptions of the countryside, culture, and flavors will delight your mind and your palette. Cheers and Bon Appetit!

Picture Book Palooza!

by Mary Lyn Ray
Ever wonder what it's like to be an author?  Does she write in a quiet corner somewhere? Or someplace loud and busy? Does she have ideas forty times a day? Or does she sometimes get stuck? And how does her dog make her lucky? Mary Lyn Ray, together with illustrations from Steven Henry (Ella the Elegant Elephant) that are chock full of hidden jokes, answers these questions and more in a story of one writer, her furry friend, and a school visit that brings authors young and old (and their dogs) together.

Follow the journey of the sun across the world from a whale's eye to a little girl's window in Bob Graham's tender, transcendent story.  With an eye for capturing small moments of shared experience, Bob Graham illuminates the natural wonder that comes with every new day.  Beautiful!

Nerdy Birdy
by Aaron Reynolds
Nerdy Birdy likes reading, video games, and reading about video games, which immediately disqualifies him for membership in the cool crowd. When he's at his lowest point, Nerdy Birdy meets a flock just like him.  A wonderful message with delightful illustrations.

Our events coordinator, Jane, brought her dog Oscar in for a visit last weekend.  Oscar is a very naughty (Jane's description, not ours!) eight year old Bichon Frise who loves to terrorize his older brother Freddie, a huge Portuguese Water Dog.  Welcome to Wellesley Books, Oscar.

"You should never read just for "enjoyment." Read to make yourself smarter! Less judgmental. More apt to understand your friends' insane behavior, or better yet, your own. Pick "hard books." Ones you have to concentrate on while reading. And for God's sake, don't let me ever hear you say, "I can't read fiction. I only have time for the truth." Fiction is the truth, fool! Ever hear of "literature"? That means fiction, too."
