Bill's Book Group For Guys

by Patrick DeWitt

You'll laugh out loud at the humor in the terse philosophical musings and staccato banter between two brothers, hired guns, on a manhunt across the California Gold Country. This modern take on the traditional Western novel is a fun, but substantive, read.

Join Bill's Book Group for Guys for a relaxed evening in the store discussing a specially-chosen book while enjoying a beer, glass of wine, or a select single-malt whiskey.  $25 buys the book and a ticket to the event, including libations.

Bookseller Recommendations!
Sally Recommends:
Fates And Furies
by Lauren Groff
The story of Mathilde and Lotto is the story of the perfect couple. Or is it? Lauren Groff's gorgeous language makes this novel a modern fairy tale. This tale of love and marriage and art is told from both sides, and there are many twists along the way. I love this book!

Rebecca Recommends:
Cheap Chic
by Caterine Milinaire and Carol Troy
The '70s classic is back in print, and it's impressive how little the advice and the clothing have dated (with the exception of the chapter on "borrowing" ethnic clothing).  This book focuses on how to develop personal style, and the people photographed in their favorite outfits look fantastically quirky, individual and confident, though it doesn't hurt that a lot of them are 6 feet tall and gorgeous.  As a 5-foot-tall non-model, though, there's still a lot of helpful advice here for me & probably for you, too!

Phyllis recommends:
by Stephen P. Kiernan
This is a powerful story about the critical role of human empathy in dealing with two very important contemporary issues, hospice care and post war PTSD.  Kiernan's characters are well drawn and give unique perspectives on death, trauma, and providing care in difficult times.  The Hummingbird is a must read for all of us who want to help loved ones die with dignity and veterans achieve a return to normal life after serving our country.

Gillian recommends:
by Bill Clegg
A deadly house fire the night before a wedding reveals the many human connections within a small community. That sounds grim, and it certainly is a sad premise, but the novel is less about the tragedy than about the complicated lives of all the people it touches - the bride's devastated mother, the unpaid caterer, a teenage boy in the house next door.  Although the characters each have their own perspectives on the tragedy, their complicated lives are elegantly intertwined in this impressive debut novel.

"When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature.
If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of myself in the world,
I would do that again by reading, just as I did when I was young."
