What We Are Reading...

"I never feel lonely if I've got a book - they're like old friends.  Even if you're not reading them over and over again, you know they are there.  And they are a part of your history.  They sort of tell a story about the journey of your life."
 - Emilia Fox

Bookseller Recommendations!

Peter Recommends:

by Etgar Keret
The seven good years of this memoir's title are those between the birth of the author's son and the death of his father. In a series of short, wry vignettes that will have you laughing one moment and tearing up the next, Israeli writer and film maker Keret limns those small moments of sadness and joy that color the details of daily life.

Phyllis Recommends:

Infinite Home

by Kathleen Alcott

This is a beautifully written novel and a fabulous study of human nature.  Alcott's broken characters reveal the good in humanity as they overcome personal obstacles to aid each other in times of great need. Unpredictable and incredibly charming, Infinite Home will give you insights into far ranging conditions including dementia, agoraphobia, and Williams syndrome as well as an appreciation for the power of relationships to strengthen individuals.

Marilyn Recommends:

Goodbye Stranger
by Rebecca Stead
I recommend this book for 7th to 10th graders but really enjoyed it as an adult.  The author interweaves storylines very well, and the writing is very pleasing - seemingly simple metaphors with profound meaning.  The story explores the maturing of three best friends in the 7th grade, a 10th grader dealing with friendship issues, and another 7th grader grappling with his beloved grandparents' separation.

William Recommends:

Kitchens Kitchens Of The Great Midwest
by J. Ryan Stradal

Each chapter is a short story that can be read and enjoyed on its own, but when you put them together, you get a lovely tale of a young woman who becomes a famous chef.  While she is the main character of the novel, she is never the main character of the various chapters.  The writing in this first novel is so good, I kept reading just one more chapter before bed.  Then, one more after that.  Then, another.  Utterly charming and a triumph of structure.

The Accidental Afterlife Of Thomas Marsden

 by Emma Trevayne

Nicole, age 11, says:

"Combine fairies, strange spells, and a mystery in London and you get an awesome tale a.k.a The Accidental Afterlife Of Thomas Marsden.  This book is enchanting in it's own way with a different twist on fairies and strange "occupations".  Enjoy!"

Dungeoneers The Dungeoneers

by John David Anderson

Adham, age 12, reports:

"The world is not fair, and Colm Candorly is fighting on the losing end. His family barely gets by, and struggles to make ends meet. To help his family, Colm uses his natural gift of pickpocketing, but when his father catches him, he falls into the hands of Finn Argos, a pickpocketing, thieving rogue. Instead of serving punishment for his crimes, Colm is offered to accompany Finn to his Guild, and learn the art of dungeoneering. But after going into a real dungeon, he discovers not everyone is as honest as they may seem."

Endgame: The Calling
by James Frey and Nils Johnson-Shelton

Kiran, age 12, says,

"Endgame: The Calling is a dystopian novel written by James Frey and Nils Johnson-Shelton. It could be compared to The Hunger Games but the plot is more intense and the story is told from different points of view. The way it is written pulls you in unlike any other book and the pace is extremely fast. There are some vivid parts and colorful language but fans of The Hunger Games will like it."

by Bill Konigsberg
Cydney, age 12 reports:
"This book was not an easy read.  It dealt with many 'heavy' subjects such as alcohol issues, death, and anger.  However, the characters were nice and believable.  The main character, Carson, really seemed like a real teenager.  Aisha, Carson's lesbian sidekick also was a spot on character.  The novel showed views of LGBTQ hardships and issues through the eyes of a heterosexual person like myself, and I found that extremely helpful.  Through this book I feel I built up some extra compassion towards those who are different than I am and I think other people who read it will too."

Dog of the Week

  • Luna
Luna was a rescue dog, found in Kentucky as a stray and brought all the way to Massachusetts, where the four and a half year old terrier mix now lives with her proud parents.  Her hobbies include running with her friends and visiting the dog park.  Squirrels beware!  Luna enjoys chasing the furry-tailed rodents, and if she could climb
trees . . . look out!  She adores her local mailman, eagerly awaiting his visit every day, and she has the distinction of never turning down a treat in her life.  She certainly enjoyed her biscuit when we gave one to her.  Welcome to Wellesley Books, Luna!
