  Summertime at Wellesley Books!

July 8, 2015

Go Set A Watchman with Harper Lee and Wellesley Books!

Harper Lee

Everybody at Wellesley Books is thrilled to see a new book by Harper Lee arriving on July 14th, and we can't wait to read all about the grown-up Scout Finch and her return to Maycomb.  Will her father, Atticus, remain the same during the turbulent political events of the 1950s?  To celebrate the release of such a major novel, Wellesley Books is holding an event at 11:00am on release day, July 14th.  We'll be serving sweet tea and cookies, and we will have trivia with prizes through the afternoon.    Join us, and be sure to reread To Kill A Mockingbird to prepare for Go Set A Watchman

To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The unforgettable novel of a childhood in a sleepy Southern town and the crisis of conscience that rocked it, To Kill A Mockingbird became both an instant bestseller and a critical success when it was first published in 1960. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and was later made into an Academy Award-winning film, also a classic.  "Shame on me for having passed through my school days without having read this amazing book.  I so enjoyed everything about this book and wonder how my appreciation would have differed had I read it in my younger days."  - From Lisa recommends

Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee

An historic literary event: the publication of a newly discovered novel, the earliest known work from Harper Lee, the beloved, bestselling author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, To Kill a Mockingbird.  Originally written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman was the novel Harper Lee first submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird. Assumed to have been lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014.  Exploring how the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird are adjusting to the turbulent events transforming mid-1950s America, Go Set a Watchman casts a fascinating new light on Harper Lee's enduring classic. Moving, funny and compelling, it stands as a magnificent novel in its own right.

Hammer Head
by Nina MacLaughlin
MacLaughlin spent her twenties working at the Boston Phoenix, sitting behind a desk and staring at a screen.  Yearning for more tangible work, she became a carpenter's assistant.  This memoir tells the rich and entertaining story of how her life has changed.
by Elizabeth Alexander
Alexander breaks from the world of poetry to reflect upon her life as it is thrown into turmoil by the unexpected death of her husband.  Not only is this a great memoir, but it is also a deeply-felt meditation on the blessings of love, family, art, and community.
by Mary Doria Russell
Epitaph is an epic, historically-accurate re-telling of the events surrounding the gunfight at the O.K. Corral.  Russel spins an American version of The Iliad, filled with backroom politics, colorful characters, and heart-breaking tragedy.  This is the best Western historical novel since Lonesome Dove!

The Sellout
by Paul Beatty

This wild and daring satire of race in America will have you laughing, but wondering if you really should!  Beatty skewers racial stereotypes in this tale of one black man's effort to resegregate his Los Angeles neighborhood.
