Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler
Butler combines small town charm with contemporary challenges in this fresh, evocative novel set in the unchanging environment of a close knit farming community in rural Wisconsin.  Five high school friends must come to terms with their life choices from their marriages, divorces, successes, and failures.  This is an extremely moving novel.

The Mountaintop School For Dogs And Other Second Chances
by Ellen Cooney
This is the story of two women and their pack of dogs who, having lost their way in the world, find a place at a training school and radical rescue center called The Sanctuary.  "A wise, engaging meditation on dogs, love, and recovery from pain. Come. Sit. Read " --Lily King, author of "Euphoria"

Mayumi And The Sea Of Happiness by Jennifer Tseng
This is a fun summer literary novel about illicit sex, good books, and unexpected friendship.  Mayumi, a librarian on a small island off the coast of New England, has a mundane life, until the day she issues a library card to a shy seventeen year old boy.  Things become even more complicated when she befriends the young man's mother.  Author Jennifer Tseng is a librarian at the West Tisbury Lbrary on Martha's Vineyard!

Man Called Ove
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
Get ready to be charmed by this wonderful novel from Sweden about a hilariously grumpy old man whose solitary world is intruded upon and is slowly changed by the boisterous family that moves next door.  A feel-good story in the spirit of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Major Pettigrew's Last Stand.

Bookseller Recommendations For Great Summer Reading!

Phyllis recommends:

The Shore
by Sara Taylor
The Shore  is an engrossing compilation of grimly realistic and interrelated vignettes which take place on the isolated islands off the Virginia coast between 1876 and 2037. Although an element of misery is common to most stories, Taylor manages to balance the gloom with doses of mysticism, inner strength and redemption for her favored protagonists.  The Shore is heart wrenching, emotional and addictive from beginning to end.
Peter recommends:

Muse

by Jonathan Galassi
Written by a true publishing industry insider (Galassi is president of Farrar, Straus & Giroux), Muse is a sprightly gem of a book. While rival publishers battle over a prized author, it is a young editor with divided loyalties to both who ultimately becomes the author's confidante. Jonathan Galassi's debut novel (he is also a published poet) is part publishing-world satire, part paean to the joy of literature, and imbued throughout with great warmth and affection for those who love the power of the written word.
Bill Recommends:
by Stephen Jarvis
This rollicking great novel, brimming with vivid characters, takes the position that Charles Dickens did not create his first, and arguably greatest, novel on his own.  It sends the reader on a cartwheeling tour of Victorian London courtrooms, taverns, and prison houses.  Full of wit and sardonic humor, there's true emotion at the heart of this epic, which elevates the entire delightful experience.
Caitlyn recommends:

Uprooted
by Naomi Novik

Like  a newly discovered Grimm's Fairy Tale, Novik's new book is a tale of dragons and wizards, but with an intelligent, adult aspect to it.  The writing is terrific, imaginative, and I couldn't put this book down until I finished it!  The best fantasy novel I've read in a long time.

The Sock Thief by Anna Crespo, illustrated by Nana Gonzales

Once a week, Felipe needs socks, so he leaves for school early, and as he walks through his small Brazilian town, he steals socks and replaces them with mangos.  Why does he need socks when he wears flip-flops?  A fun read that's a nice introduction to another culture.

The Adventures Of Sophie Mouse: A New Friend by Poppy Green

Sophie Mouse and her best friend Hattie Frog meet a new classmate and learn the importance of accepting others, ignoring false rumors, and making new friends.  With a colorful cast of forest-animals and cozy illustrations, this is a charming story for early readers!

Gone Fishing by Tamara Will Wissinger

Sam, Dad, and Lucy head out for a day of fishing.  What will they catch?  This story is delightfully told, utilizing a variety of poetic forms.  A charming read for third or fourth graders, especially in the summertime!  "Just the thing for readers with a burgeoning interest in poetry or angling." - Publishers Weekly

The Way Home Looks Now by Wendy Wan-Long Shang
Peter Lee is 12, and he lives for baseball.  It is the glue that holds his family together.  Then a tragedy strikes, and baseball no longer seems important to any of them.  This is a wonderful story about fathers and sons, Chinese-American culture, healing, and, of course, baseball.
