Gareth Hinds We have hosted some great authors and events over the last couple of weeks including Kate Messner, Gareth Hinds, and Betty's Lunchtime Book Group. We would like to extend our thanks to you for braving the weather, navigating the Alps in our parking lot and making these events so successful. There's nothing better than weathering the storm in the company of book people. Pictured on the left is Gareth Hinds holding a signed copy of his new graphic novel interpretation of Macbeth

One of our most popular events is back! On Thursday, February 26 at 7:00pm, Wellesley Books will host an open house for local self-published authors. The authors will discuss their books as well as the process of becoming a published writer. Stop in for a glass of wine and pick up the next best seller!

Bookseller Recommendations

Funny Girl Funny Girl
by Nick Hornby

Barbara Parker's ambition to make it as the English Lucille Ball animates this breezy romp through the trenches of early-sixties British TV. She may be graced with the kind of looks that open doors, but it's her quick wit and knack for comedy that get her from provincial Blackpool to London and into her first TV role in record time as the lead in a domestic comedy series that breaks all records. Her catalytic spirit inspires her co-workers to follow their own dreams as the grey fog of post-war conformity lifts and the Technicolor sixties come to life. Nick Hornby writes warmly, with lots of laughs and lots of heart.
Luigi's Freedom Ride Luigi's Freedom Ride
by Alan Murray

Luigi's Freedom Ride is the fast-paced, quirky story of Luigi Ferraro, "a bicycle man of the highest order". As a youth,  Luigi rebuilds a discarded bicycle, and from then on the business of bicycles becomes his life's passion. Luigi's adventures as an Italian conscript in World War II and his ensuing journey to the "farthest place in the world" are by turn humorous and heartbreaking. Murray 's satirical style highlights disturbing truths about Mussolini's regime and strikes a wonderful balance between his light, free spirited characters and the hard-hitting realities of wartime survival.
Bellweather Rhapsody Bellweather Rhapsody
by Kate Racculia

A statewide music festival is held at a faded grand old hotel. A mix of students, chaperones, staff and guests make for an intriguing story involving past and present events. The descriptions of the meaning and feelings that music evoke are memorable. There's even a blizzard thrown in which was timely to my mid-winter reading!
All Our Names All Our Names
by Dinaw Mengestu

Isaac is a young black man caught up in the African revolution in Uganda in the early '70's. Helen is a white social worker in a small Midwestern college town who helps Isaac when he leaves his country behind. Their relationship is a beautifully told story of identity, and loss and past secrets.

  • Win tickets to Fenway Park!
Matt Tavares It's hard to believe now, but Spring will be here soon.  That means baseball and spring training!  Candlewick Press and the amazing author/illustrator Matt Tavares are running a terrific promotion.  Taken from Matt's blog:
"My publisher, Candlewick Press, is teaming up with some of my favorite independent bookstores around New England for an awesome promotion that I am really excited about. Starting February 10 (the day Growing Up Pedro comes out!), anyone who purchases any of my baseball books at a participating store can enter to win two tickets to a behind-the-scenes tour of Fenway Park, with me.  We'll go inside the dugouts, down onto the field, we'll make diving catches up against the green monster... aw man, I am so excited for this."  We are lucky to be one of those independent bookstores, so stop by, buy a book, and think Spring!

Dog of the Week

  • Winslow
Winslow Looking very pretty in a patch of winter sunshine is our Dog of the Week, Winslow. She is a beautiful four month-old yellow Lab who already knows how to wait patiently in a "down" position for a treat. I want to know how she keeps her sweet paws so clean in this messy weather. Thanks for visiting, Winslow!
