January 7, 2015

Welcome to the very first newsletter of 2015! We are so grateful to you for making our 2014 such a great success. It is always such a joy to see everyone in the store during the holidays.

New Year's resolution... read more? Exercise? Learn a new hobby? Join a book group? Come in and we will be happy to find just the perfect book to get you on your way or sign you up for one of our fabulous book groups - Lunchtime Book Group with Betty or Bill's Book Group for Guys. There is still plenty of time to read each group's current selection.

Our event with Anita Diamant tomorrow night, Thursday, January 7 at 7:00pm is sold out.  If you would like to meet Anita and have her sign a copy of her new novel, The Boston Girl, come to the store at 8:15pm and join the signing line after the event. Please remember that Anita will only be signing books purchased from Wellesley Books. Or you can call the store and pre-pay for a personalized, signed copy. Please call the store at (781) 431-1160 for more details.

2015 Tournament of Books The Tournament of Books is back! This describes it perfectly: "Never have we claimed that this elimination process is fair. It is capricious and silly. But the conversation that results is one that we value, and we hope that some of you will value it, too." Come in the store and vote - we can compare our results with the official judges' results and we can enjoy some great discussions!

Peter Sherman We are so pleased to welcome our new manager, Peter Sherman. Peter is busy learning the ropes and getting to know our customers. Come on in and say hello! Make sure and ask what he is reading. Isn't that the only question we ask each other?

"For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet or excite you. Books help us understand who we are and how we are to behave. They show us what community and friendship mean; they show us how to live and die."
~Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life

Bookseller Recommendations

A Fine Summer's Day A Fine Summer's Day
by Charles Todd

Finally we have the opportunity to meet Ian Rutledge, Charles Todd's brilliant but shell-shocked police inspector, before his experiences in the First World War. In the lovely English summer of 1914, Rutledge is preparing to propose to the woman he loves and continuing his satisfying police career. While investigating a series of apparently unconnected murders of upstanding citizens, he is unaware of the slow sequence of events that will tear apart his world and his own mind. It made me want to read all of the Ian Rutledge books again!
The Secret Wisdom of the Earth The Secret Wisdom of the Earth
by Christopher Scotton

Kevin is 14 years old when he and his mother come to spend the summer with Pops, his maternal grandfather in rural Kentucky. Kevin and his mother are traumatized after a horrific accident takes his younger brother's life. Over the course of the summer, Pops becomes Kevin's mentor, Kevin befriends a half-wild boy named Buzzy, and the town rebels against the new method of mining, mountaintop removal. This is a book that you will want to put in everyone's hands.
The Forgers The Forgers by Bradford Morrow
The Forgers begins with a brutal murder of a reclusive book collector.  Who was Adam and what was he hiding?  A nameless narrator, a convicted forger, acquainted with Adam and in love with Meghan, Adam's sister seeks redemption for this crime. Bradford Morrow takes us along into the dark and dangerous world of antiquarian book collecting.
The Book of Strange New Things The Book of Strange New Things
by Michel Faber

A strange book indeed - a meditation on love and the foundations of human sustenance told via an alien landscape. It's a long book that needs to be read in large swaths to appreciate the rhythms and cadences in the writing. I knew nothing of Faber, or his cult status, when I began this book. I feel lucky to have opened it.

  • New releases to get excited for...
Welcome 2015!  One of the many benefits of working in a bookstore is the chance to read books before they are published.  (See our Children's ARC Program Details for information on how those between the ages of 8 and 17 can get to do this as well.)  Thus, we have anxiously been awaiting 2015 so we could share these new titles with you.

Fish in a Tree   by Lynda Mullaly Hunt  due out 2/5/15
Fans of One for the Murphys will enjoy Lynda Mullaly Hunt's newest novel.  Ally is a very clever girl, so clever that she has been able to hide her inability to read from her teachers.  Mr. Daniels is that perfect teacher who sees the possibilities in all his students and helps them find their talents.  When Mr. Daniels meets Ally, will he discover her secret?  A wonderfully touching story that highlights the fact that we all have our own unique gifts.

Monstrous   by Marcy Kate Connolly  due out 2/10/15
For fans of fantasy and fairy tales, Monstrous will not disappoint you.  Kymera emerges from her father's lab enhanced with the wings of a raven, the tail of a serpent, the claws and eyes of a cat and a strange patchwork of skin tones. She has been assigned a mission to rescue girls sickened and kidnapped by an evil wizard.  As Kymera learns more about her past, she starts to question her mission.

Growing Up Pedro: How the Martinez Brothers Made It from the Dominican Republic All the Way to the Major Leagues
by Matt Tavares  due out 2/10/15
Not only is this a great sports story, but it is a wonderful ode to the bonds of family and brothers.

Echo   by Pam Munoz Ryan  due out 2/24/15
What a great blend of fairy tale, historical fiction and the arts... What lovable, earnest characters who you can not help but hope for all things wonderful to happen to...What a rich well told story that grabs your attention and does not let go until the last page.  Pam Munoz Ryan's ability to weave music and the shared thread of a harmonica to connect all the story lines is magical.

We must also mention one of our favorites from 2012 has finally arrived in paperback,  The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate.  This is just the start, we cannot wait to see what other fabulous books 2015 brings!

In the Gift Aisle

  • Litographs
Litographs Every Litograph design emerges from the text of a book. Just as the words on the pages of your favorite novel come alive in your imagination, their products are designed to illustrate the memorable characters and scenes rooted in text and imitated on stage.

Litographs work closely with professional artists to create a new visual experience for classic and contemporary works alike. From a distance, the artwork illustrates a theme, character, or setting from each book's descriptive pages. Move closer and the text becomes fully legible.

Dog of the Week

  • Rambo
Rambo
Our Dog of the Week is Rambo, a 12-ish year-old Shepherd (wolf?) mix who was rescued from the streets of Jersey City. Despite his name, he has a shy and gentle disposition. What a sweet face!

Check out the banner at the top of the email. We are featuring some of our favorite Dogs of the Week from 2014. We love our doggies!
