November 12, 2014

As we prepare for the holiday season, it is a good time to reflect and give thanks. We at Wellesley Books are grateful to be part of such a loyal, vibrant community of readers. We would like to thank you by making your holiday shopping as easy as possible -- with our annual Holiday Recommendation booklet, beautiful cards, unique gifts, complimentary gift wrapping, and of course personal recommendations from our knowledgeable booksellers. Thank you for keeping us your local, independent bookstore.

Nichole Bernier & Jenna Blum Small Business Saturday -- the Saturday after Thanksgiving -- is a day to rally people to shop at local businesses. And this year local authors are again joining the celebration with the Indies First movement at local independent bookstores by working on Small Business Saturday. Wellesley Books will have Nichole Bernier (12-2pm) and Jenna Blum (2-4pm) on hand to assist you with your shopping and they might even gift wrap it for you! American Express cardholders will receive up to three $10 statement credits (on purchases of $10 or more) per registered card at a qualifying small business (like ours!). You can register your card beginning on Sunday, November 16th.

Boris and Stella and the Perfect Gift Join us at Wellesley Books on Saturday, November 29th at 11:00am for storytime with Dara Goldman, Sudbury author and illustrator of Boris and Stella and the Perfect Gift.  In this child-oriented version of The Gift of the Magi, Boris wants to give something special to Stella for Christmas, and Stella wants to give Boris something special for Hanukkah. In the end, these two big-city bears each sell their most precious possessions to give each other the perfect gift. Join Wellesley Books for reading, questions, refreshments, and kids activities.

Bookseller Recommendations

This Dark Road to Mercy This Dark Road to Mercy
by Wiley Cash

This Dark Road to Mercy is a fast paced novel about the plight of two motherless sisters, their wayward father, a damaged legal guardian and a violent ex-convict with revenge in his blood. Although the plot steals the show, Cash's beautiful prose and believable, poetic characters give this literary thriller depth and emotion. You will not be able to put it down!
Moab is My Washpot Moab is My Washpot
by Stephen Fry

This funny, highly quotable, charmingly digressive memoir tells the story of Stephen Fry's school years.  He conveys the texture of private-school life in late '60s England -- he repeatedly gets into trouble and begins to realize he's gay, in a time and place where "gay" is barely even a word.   I read this years ago and am thrilled it's finally back in print in the US.
The Burning Room The Burning Room
by Michael Connelly

Harry Bosch is back in Michael Connolly's newest mystery.  Harry, now working for the cold case squad, is called into action when Orlando Merced, a mariachi singer, dies ten years after a shooting.   In his quest for the killer, Harry crosses paths with the political and business establishments of Los Angeles - and connects the unsolved murder to a long ago tragedy in his new partners' life.
The Art of Asking The Art of Asking
by Amanda Palmer

Many people won't like this book, part-memoir, part TED talk, part survival guide to the world of the internet, nor will they like Amanda Palmer, and that is the risk she takes every time she asks for something. But take the plunge, and read The Art of Asking. You will be in close contact with a dynamic woman, who has built a career by asking. She began as a human statue on the streets of Boston and is now an internationally acclaimed artist. In the book you will see social media from the inside through the eyes of one of its leading users. This is a book that will make you look anew at how you interact with people on-line and in your everyday life.

  • Family Book Club
Our customers have the best ideas!  During this time of year when families tend to gather for the various holiday celebrations, we have several customers who host a "family book club".  Either all the family members read the same book or depending on age of participants, books on the same subject are read to allow for varying reading levels.  Here are several suggestions if you would like to try this with your own group this season.

For a book to elicit conversations about different cultures and speaking out against injustices, try:
Malala, a Brave Girl from Pakistan/Iqbal, a Brave Boy from Pakistan: Two Stories of Bravery by Jeanette Winter
I Am Malala Young Readers Edition by Malala Yousafzai with Patricia McCormick
I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai with Christina Lamb

For a book to elicit conversations about survival and overcoming obstacles, try:
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
Unbroken Adapted for Young Adults by Laura Hillenbrand

For a book to elicit conversations about solving problems and trying to improve conditions, try:
Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder
Mountains Beyond Mountains Adapted for Young People by Tracy Kidder and Michael French

For a book to elicit conversations about Boston's sports history and sports heroes try:
The Boy in Number Four by Kara Kootstra
Orr: My Story by Bobby Orr

For a "classic" read, try:
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden
Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie

Dog of the Week

  • Whisky
The elegant and graceful Whisky is a retired racing Greyhound whose human companion is a co-worker of our owner, Bill Kohli. We found it extremely appropriate for Bill to pose with Whisky as members of Bill's Book Group for Guys not only discuss their latest selection, they also partake of a glass or two of whisky. Good conversation, excellent company, and a fine selection of whisky - what  more could you ask for? I think it would be pretty cool if Whisky joined Bill at his next bookgroup meeting. If the group needs dog curled at their feet,
Whisky could be their mascot.
