October 1, 2014

Fall WIndow Welcome October! Fall in New England does its very best to make up for our winters. And does a darn good job, if you ask me. If you are feeling inspired to cozy up with a good book, we will pair you up with a new title and fun mug for your hot cocoa and you are good to go!

Plus there are events in the store for every reader in your family. Keep an eye out for the creepy butler and the giant gourds...they will be here soon!

Deborah Crombie We are thrilled to welcome multiple award-winning mystery novelist Deborah Crombie to Wellesley Books tonight, Wednesday, October 1st at 7:00pm to present her newest book in the Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James series, To Dwell in Darkness. To Dwell in Darkness is a powerful tale of intrigue, betrayal and lies, and is Crombie's most atmospheric novel yet.  There is no more perfect way to welcome the month of October than with a good mystery!

Our event with B.J. Novak quickly sold out, but you can still order a signed copy of his new book, The Book With No Pictures, while supplies last. Please call the store at (781) 431-1160 for more information.

Raina Telgemeier Come meet New York Times bestselling author and Eisner Award-winner Raina Telgemeier on Monday, October 6th at 7:00pm at the Morse Institute Library in Natick. Her new book Sisters came out this August and is the companion to her graphic memoir, Smile. In Sisters, Raina uses her signature humor and charm in both present-day narrative and perfectly placed flashbacks to tell the story of her relationship with her sister, which unfolds during the course of a road trip from their home in San Francisco to a family reunion in Colorado. Raina will be sharing stories about her books, with a signing to follow.

H. D. S. Greenway Come to Wellesley Books on Tuesday, October 7th at 7:00pm to meet Needham local and long-time Boston Globe reporter H.D.S. Greenway. An eyewitness to the world's most volatile war zones, Mr. Greenway has many adventures to share in his new memoir, Foreign Correspondent. It is a great adventure story -- the life of a war correspondent on the front lines for five decades. Don't miss this chance to discuss history with someone who lived it.

Bookseller Recommendations

The Monogram Murders The Monogram Murders by Sophie Hannah
Sophie Hannah has captured the personality of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot so perfectly in The Monogram Murders, it's eerie.
Hannah's Poirot is taking a vacation, resting the little gray cells, by staying in a lodging house in view of his home. (For Poirot travel is stimulating, but not restful). Poirot quickly takes Edward Catchpool, a fellow lodger and detective at Scotland Yard, under his wing. One evening, Catchpool comes in distressed by three murders committed in three separate rooms in a London hotel, and the partnership between the experienced, world-famous detective and his protg takes off. The staff at the hotel, especially the general manager, Luca Lazzari, are brilliantly described. Fans of Agatha Christie will not be disappointed with this faithful yet fresh mystery starring the ever so efficient Belgian, Hercule Poirot.
Foreign Correspondent Foreign Correspondent
by H. D. S. Greenway

Over the last thirty-six years, readers of the Boston Globe have come to rely on H. D. S. Greenway for in-depth reporting and pungent analysis of foreign affairs. In this engrossing memoir of a peripatetic career in journalism, Greenway, here given an opportunity to stretch out, proves to be a splendid raconteur as well. For me, the chapters on Southeast Asia in the '60s and '70s were especially affecting, but Foreign Correspondent is a grand, endlessly informative, and frequently good-humored read from beginning to end.
Friendswood Friendswood
by
Ren Steinke
Friendswood transports us to a small oil refining community in Texas where an unusually high percentage of the population contracts cancer. Steinke takes us deep into the lives of well drawn main characters to highlight the interconnectedness as well as the tensions among the residents of Friendswood. The chain reaction of events both in the adult world of fighting big business and the teen world of fighting for social acceptance all climax to dramatically affect the lives of all involved. Fast moving and suspenseful!.
The Woman Upstairs The Woman Upstairs
by Claire Messud

Nora, the woman upstairs, is a third grade teacher we all know and love. She's wonderful with children -- lively and inventive and vulnerable to an obsession that drives the book. Messud's brainy, compulsive novel brings us inside Nora's life as she falls in love with a family - with them she becomes even more artistic and charismatic; but how can a single woman possess a whole family without setting off sirens of alarm?
