September 18, 2014

So many books, so little time! There are so many fabulous hardcover new releases that I just couldn't narrow it down to our usual number. The plethora of new books is one of the very best things about the fall season.  It's also the time when the longlists for the National Book Award are announced. You can peruse the lists on their website. How many of these titles have you read? There are a few store favorites on the list. The finalists will be announced on October 15.

We are happy to introduce our new book group program. Register your book group, receive our book group discount, see what other book groups are reading, and receive invitations to special events and talks designed specifically for book groups.

Alyson Richman Bestselling authors Alyson Richman and Jenna Blum join us on Tuesday, September 23 at 7:00pm to discuss and sign copies of their new books, The Garden of Letters and Grand Central. Written in dazzling prose and set against the rich backdrop of World War II Italy, Alyson Richman's Garden of Letters captures the hope, suspense, and romance of an uncertain era, in an intertwining story of first love, great tragedy, Jenna Blumand spectacular bravery. In Grand Central, ten bestselling authors, including Jenna Blum, have created their own stories inspired by New York City's Grand Central Terminal. Set on the same day just after the end of World War II, these stories reflect a time of hope, uncertainty, change, and renewal. This iconic landmark is a place where people come to say hello and good-bye, and each person who passes through has a story to tell. Don't miss this event with two talented, entertaining authors.

Claudia Lucero On Tuesday, September 30th at 7pm, learn how to make Ricotta, Mozzarella, Chvre, Paneer--Even Burrata in under an hour with Claudia Lucero. Her new cookbook, One Hour Cheese, features recipes and instructions that are both easy-to-follow and foolproof. Claudia Lucero shows you how to make sixteen fresh cheeses at home, using easily available ingredients and tools, in an hour or less. Tickets to this event are $10 and available both on our website or in the store.

Deborah Crombie We are thrilled to welcome multiple award-winning mystery novelist Deborah Crombie to Wellesley Books on Wednesday, October 1st at 7:00pm to present her newest book in the Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James series, To Dwell in Darkness. To Dwell in Darkness is a powerful tale of intrigue, betrayal and lies, and is Crombie's most atmospheric novel yet.

Raina Telgemeier Come meet New York Times bestselling and Eisner Award-winner Raina Telgemeier on Monday, October 6th at 7:00pm at the Morse Institute Library in Natick. Her new book Sisters came out this August and is the companion to her graphic memoir, Smile. In Sisters, Raina uses her signature humor and charm in both present-day narrative and perfectly placed flashbacks to tell the story of her relationship with her sister, which unfolds during the course of a road trip from their home in San Francisco to a family reunion in Colorado. Raina will be sharing stories about her books, with a signing to follow.

Bookseller Recommendations

Station Eleven Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel
The world begins again after a flu pandemic wipes out life as we know it.  A group of actors and musicians travel in a rusted out truck caravan pulled by horses and perform where they can. It is a strange life, and Emily St. John Mandel makes it beautiful and interesting. I can't believe I just read another dystopian novel and liked it!
Neverhome Neverhome
by Laird Hunt

Neverhome  is a truly compelling fictional account of one woman's experience as a Union solder in the Civil War.  Ash (nee Constance) Hunt leaves her farm and husband to answer a call to duty by disguising herself as a man and joining the ranks.  Her experiences on the
battlefield and as a captive are grimly detailed by Hunt.  The gruesome accounts of war time are interspersed with beautiful memories of life back on the farm.  If you enjoy odysseys and are not afraid of a little gore, this is a fascinating tale of bravery, barbarity and love.

The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the WIndow and Disappeared
by Jonas Jonasson

Who can resist a book with a title like this? As a lover of dark Swedish mysteries, I was captivated by this story of an unlikely hero who inadvertently thwarts the machinations of a pretty inept group of criminals. As he escapes his 100th birthday party at his nursing home, Allen Karlsson collects a motley group of misfits including a petty thief, a perpetual student, a red-haired beauty, and an elephant. Interspersed with their flight through Sweden is the incredible story of Allen's life, in which he has managed to have an impact on many of the crucial events of the twentieth century. This is a perfect antidote to the coming of the cold weather and dark evenings of fall.
The Blackhouse The Blackhouse
by Peter May

As a mystery reader, I am always looking for new authors, and series, and Peter May, a bestselling author in Great Britain, is a great find. The Blackhouse is set on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides off the coast of northern Scotland. The landscape is extraordinary and bleak, the perfect setting for an atmospheric, well-written, well-plotted mystery. May's detective, Fin MacLeod, is pulled back from Edinburgh to investigate a brutal murder that forces him to confront his own traumatic younger self. I couldn't wait to begin the sequel, The Lewis Man. So far it's even better.

Signed copies of The Lewis Man are available while stocks last.

Barry recommends:
Gus & Me Gus & Me by Keith Richards
If you read Keith Richards's autobiography, Life, you know that the worn old Stone has a great big heart. He demonstrates it once again in his picture book for kids, Gus & Me, in which he skillfully evokes the close relationship he had with his music-loving, slightly rascally grandfather, Theodore Augustus "Gus" Dupree. Keith's daughter Theodora--who's named after Gus--does a stalwart job with the illustrations, and the bottom line is that kids who don't know who the Rolling Stones are will still enjoy this heartfelt account of the connection between a young boy and the grandpa who gave him his first guitar.

Marilyn recommends:
Brown Girl Dreaming
Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson
Her early life story is so beautifully told in free-verse -- it just flows. Her African-American identity is informed by having lived in both the South and the North, as well as by having grown up at a time of greet historical change. We experience her growth as a writer finding a way to cope with her own unique learning style. Ultimately,  her story is about each of us being part of a family fabric and about the choices we will have to make to become the person we are -- "You".

Rebecca recommends:
El Deafo El Deafo by Cece Bell
Cece loses her hearing after she comes down with meningitis at age 4.  She returns to school with a very visible marker of difference: a hearing aid worn around her chest.   A new frenemy and an increasing sense of isolation lead her to fantasize that her state-of-the-art Phonic Ear gives her superpowers -- if only she could figure out how to use them.  This frequently laugh-out-loud story will appeal to fans of Raina Telgemeier and is thankfully self-aware and nuanced.  (Make sure to read her afterword!)

Dog of the Week

  • Maggie

This lovely girl is Maggie, and she belongs to our gift buyer, Colleen (or vice-versa?). Both of Colleen's kids are off to college, so Maggie is lonely at home waiting for someone to give her a ride in the car. She is a smart, goofy 5 year-old Standard Poodle and was more than happy to welcome customers to the store with a smile and a lean on their legs.

It was challenging to take her picture because she still bounces around like a puppy. Can you tell we were all completely enamored of her? I think she should come to work with Colleen all the time.
