So have you dumped a bucket of ice water over your head yet? Author Stephen King has - and it is worth seeing!  Only Stephen King can pull off white knee-high socks with black shoes.

This cooler weather is feeling a bit like fall, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Time for jam-packed event calendars and lots of new book releases. We have been busily reading all summer, and are eager to share our recommendations with you! Barry and Rebecca have a couple of music titles reviewed below - think they planned it?

Sweet Picks for Summer from Wellesley Books

and on piano...Nicky Hopkins And on Piano...Nicky Hopkins
by Julian Dawson

You may not know the name Nicky Hopkins, but unless you have managed to completely avoid contact with the rock music of the '60s and '70s, you've heard him on keyboards innumerable times. That's Nicky playing piano (or harpsichord, or organ) on the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil," the Beatles' "Revolution," the Who's "The Song is Over," the Kinks' "Sunny Afternoon," the Jefferson Airplane's "Volunteers," John Lennon's "Jealous Guy," George Harrison's "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)," Ringo Starr's "Photograph," Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful," the Easybeats' "Friday On My Mind"--you get the picture.

Hopkins suffered from debilitating medical problems for his entire adult life; he died in 1994 at the age of 50. Julian Dawson's biography--which is warm and admiring without being uncritical or worshipful--is a fascinating tour through rock 'n' roll's greatest and most memorable era.
Lena Finkle's Magic Barrel Lena Finkle's Magic Barrel
by Anya Ulinich

The Russian-immigrant-story-by-the-Americanized-artist is now almost its own genre, and this graphic novel is a sharply written and well-drawn example. Lena Finkle's Magic Barrel has a strong story and witty writing, but the drawings bring character, pathos and variety to the book and show the power of graphic story telling. Ulinich subtly dissects the immigrant experience by carefully showing how coming from another world affects family, work and relationships. Lena comes over from Russia with her parents, and they move to Phoenix. Then she moves on to a life in the Brooklyn world of young professionals. The men in her life-Alik from Moscow, Josh from Phoenix, and The Orphan in Brooklyn-one from each stop on her journey, hinder more than help the single mother and budding novelist. Ulinich's Finkle has finished her novel, and it's worth reading.
We Are not Ourselves We Are Not Ourselves
by Matthew Thomas

We Are Not Ourselves is a heart wrenching and evocative look into the creation of the "perfect family" and what happens as health issues threaten to destroy a well crafted life. The relationship between husband and wife as well as parent and child are carefully and realistically explored in this epic novel. Thomas creates brilliant tension between old fashioned values including commitment, love, and integrity and more modern definitions of success such as social advancement and wealth. In the end, what really defines a happy family?
Let's Talk About Love Let's Talk About Love  by Carl Wilson
A book about Cline Dion, you may ask? Yup, and it's a thoroughly enjoyable exploration of taste, French-Canadian pop music history, the felicities of music criticism, as well as a jargon-free introduction to various types of critical theory. Carl Wilson, not a Dion fan at the start of this book, makes a sincere and enlightening attempt to both examine what's really behind his musical preferences and to change them.
