July 9, 2014

Welcome to the lazy days of summer! Here at Wellesley Books we are enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and the opportunity to spend plenty of time talking books with our customers. We have recommendations on every table, and required summer reading for local schools all in one place so they are easy to find. Come in to cool off and stock up on your beach (or hammock!) reading.

Where's Waldo? The search is on -- don't miss out on all the fun! Pick up your Where's Waldo? passport at Wellesley Books and start looking for Waldo in Wellesley. Waldo is hiding in twenty-five local businesses for the month of July.  Those who spot him can win prizes, including stickers, book coupons and more. On Thursday, July 31 at 4:00pm, join us for a party including refreshments and a raffle. You might even spot Waldo himself!

Thursday, July 17th at 7:00pm, come meet  the amazing Stephanie Evanovich as she introduces her new novel, The Sweet Spot. This sizzling story brings back everyone's favorite couple from her earlier Big Girl Panties: hunky professional baseball player Chase Walker and his sassy wife Amanda. Stephanie Evanovich is a full-fledged Jersey girl who attended New York Conservatory for the Dramatic Arts, performed with several improvisational troupes, and acted in a few small-budget movies, all in preparation for the greatest job she ever had: raising her two sons. Now a full-time writer, she's an avid sports fan who holds a black belt in tae kwon do.

June Cotner Please join us on Saturday, July 26 from 12-2pm to meet author June Cotner, author of Garden Blessings: Prose, Poems and Prayers Celebrating the Love of Gardening, a one-of-a-kind treasury of uplifting prayers, poems and prose that shares a love of gardening and the many blessings that gardens bring to our lives. June Cotner, a bestselling inspirational author, has gathered a bounty of gifts from the garden offering gems of wisdom that remind the reader and gardener in all of us just how much we learn from nature.

There is a new Harry Potter story by J.K. Rowling--and Harry's grown up! Written in the voice of the fictional Daily Prophet's gossip correspondent Rita Skeeter, this post centers around the reunion of Harry Potter and his friends at the 2014 Quidditch World Cup Finals.

Penguin paperbacks are perfect for the beach. Buy any three -- including Grand Central short stories by various authors including Jenna Blum, Melanie Benjamin and Sarah McCoy, The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes, and The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert -- and receive a Penguin Beach Bag (while supplies last).

The Rise and Fall of Great Powers The Rise and Fall of Great Powers
by Tom Rachman

This is a fascinating story exploring the age old question of nature vs. nurture.  Tooley is a multi faceted, intriguing character who was raised in two totally different but equally unconventional households.  At age twenty-one, she ventures off on her own to discover her true self.  Is she a cool, detached con artist incapable of love or is she a bit quirky with deep emotions and relationships?  A good read--full of surprises to the very end!
  • Hardcover Non-Fiction
A Window on Eternity A Window on Eternity

  • Reviews that are Reader Tested
Our summer ARC Reviewer program is bustling with activity.  Readers between the ages of 8-17 are enjoying their time away from school reading and reviewing books.  Check out their recommendations below:

Seven Stories Up Seven Stories Up by Laurel Snyder
Recommended by Ellery, age 8
This story is about a little girl named Annie, who goes to visit her sick grandmother. She has never met her grandmother before, and when she does meet her, she doesn't really like her. Somehow, Annie goes back in time and meets her grandmother as a little girl. They have an adventure together and become good friends. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventurous fictions.

The Dyerville Tales
The Dyerville Tales by M.P. Kozlowsky
Recommended by Nicole, age 11
The Dyerville Tales is a good book if you like magic. There are stories told in this book that make you just want to keep reading. You see the relationship  between a kid and his father and what he would do to find him. It is sad but also mysterious. I recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy.

Aklmost Super Almost Super by Marion Jensen
Recommended by Noah, age 10
Almost Super is a great book. It is about a boy named Rafter Bailey. Every leap year on February 29th at 4:23 pm, each member of the Bailey and Johnson familes above the age of 12 gets a super power. When Rafter Bailey and his brother Benny got their superpowers, they were useless. Benny got the power to turn his belly button from a innie into an outie, and Rafter got the power to light matches on polyester. The Baileys think the Johnsons are supervillains and the Johnsons think the Baileys are supervillains. Rafter works together with Juinita Johnson and his brother Benny to get their real powers. They discover that there is a real supervillain in town. His name is October Jones. They arrive at October Jones' house. They realize he has every power in the book-every firepower, every water power, and he can fly too. October Jones is a "super super". Read this book to find out what happens next.

Buzz Kill Buzz Kill by Beth Fantaskey
Recommended by Eleanor, age 14
This book is a fictional book that follows a girl named Millie who is a reporter for the school newspaper. While investigating a story, she comes across the dead body of the head football coach. As she tries to figure out what happened, she acquires a new partner, quarterback of the football team, Chase, who is a mystery of his own. Will Millie be able to find the real criminal before the stupid detective on the case finds an innocent person guilty?
