Prayers for the Stolen Prayers for the Stolen
by Jennifer Clement

"We were messy and born from the jungle, so we were like the relatives of papaya trees, iguanas, and butterflies".
These are the girls and women who live on the Mexican hillside. They pretend to be boys, or ugly girls, so they're not taken by the men in their black SUVs. They spend their lives hiding from blaring heat, from helicopters spraying pesticides, ants, scorpions, and drug traffickers. This is a brutal, yet beautifully told story of love and resilience.

Citadel Citadel
by Kate Mosse

In war-torn France, a group of women resistance fighters - code-named Citadel - subversively battle against the occupying Germans and smuggle refugees through treacherous mountain passes into safety. Combining breathtaking action with another older story, Citadel is one of those long, satisfying adventures with characters for whom you will cheer.
What is the What What is the What
by Dave Eggers

This novel tells the story of Valentino, Achak Deng, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan.  Eggers weaves Deng's tale of hardships in war-ravaged Sudan and various refugee camps with his difficult and even more heartbreaking relocation to Atlanta. Throughout all of his improbable journeys, Deng maintains hope and a friendly demeanor but develops a healthy dose of skepticism in order to survive in his new homeland. Eggers give us an up-close look at the gritty reality faced by refugees who relocate to the United States expecting to live the "American Dream".  Thought provoking and powerful!
Grasshopper Jungle Grasshopper Jungle
by Andrew Smith

Grasshopper Jungle is one part The Perks of Being a Wallflower, one part Mars Attacks, and 100% brilliant storytelling. This is sixteen-year-old Austin Szerba's history of the End of the World. It begins in the nowhere town of Ealing, Iowa, with Austin and his best friend Robby smoking cigarettes behind the Pancake House. Austin loves his girlfriend, his best friend, skateboarding, and recording the bits of history that usually get overlooked. When Austin and Robby unintentionally release an army of giant bulletproof man-eating grasshoppers on the town of Ealing, suddenly Austin's history gets a lot more exciting. Author Andrew Smith perfectly captures the messy, painful, glorious truth of being a sixteen-year-old boy, when sometimes the End of the World is a welcome change.

  • National Poetry Month
"Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words."  ~Robert Frost

April is National Poetry month - a perfect time to appreciate poems and verse.  We have several amazing new collections that we are excited to share with you.

Goodnight Songs by Margaret Wise Brown
Twelve previously unpublished poems by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrated by some of today's most well known children's book illustrators and set to music with an accompanying CD, make for a wonderful addition to any home library.  Margaret and Lisa could hardly wait for the finished book's arrival as they were so excited by the early poetry and art work they saw.

Firefly July - A Year of Very Short Poems
selected by Paul B. Janeczko
and
Hi, Koo! - A Year of Seasons by Jon J. Muth
Both of these gorgeously illustrated collections offer poetry to enjoy during each of the four seasons.  "Hi, Koo!" introduces us to the panda bear Koo and the poetry form of haiku.  "Firefly July" showcases short poems from such accomplished authors as Charlotte Zolotow and Langston Hughes.  With these books, every season is poetry season.

Poem-Mobiles - Crazy Car Poems
by J. Patrick Lewis and Douglas Florian

What would a fish car look like?  What type of fuel would a hot dog car run on?  For those that enjoy a little humor with their poetry, this collection highlights some very imaginative transportation.

Pucks, Clubs, and Baseball Gloves - Reading and Writing Sports Poems by Catherine Ipcizade, Blake Hoena, Matt Loveridge and Mark Weakland
This sports themed collection introduces readers to basic poetry forms and terms.  From "Ping-Pong" to "Ballad of My Bowling Ball"  readers are encouraged to look at sporting events with a poet's eye.

Rutherford B Who Was He?  - Poems About Our Presidents

United States history and poetry combine in this medley of witty poems about the 43 men who have served as president.  Included are short biographies of each president.  History buffs will enjoy this factual read.
