Bookseller recommendations

Clever Girl Clever Girl
by Tessa Hadley

Detail by detail, slowly and patiently, Tessa Hadley builds a life so rich and so ordinary, it's easy to forget you're reading fiction.   The protagonist, Stella, observes everything at a calm remove, even when she's describing chaos.  The result feels like a kind of reckoning with how much control we really have over our lives.  Subtly different from anything else I've read.
The Lost Sisterhood The Lost Sisterhood
by Anne Fortier

The Lost Sisterhood is a sweeping adventure that takes you from past to future, from Oxford University to ancient Troy, with powerful women characters. Did the legendary women warriors known as the Amazons actually exist? Did they leave behind pricless hidden treasure? This is one of those books to take you away and keep you engrossed until the last page.

The UnAmericans The UnAmericans
by Molly Antopol

This is a terrific collection of stories with locales from America, to Israel, to the Soviet Union. There is historical context to most of the stories, yet they are made personal and current, showing humanity, humor, and love. In "Retrospective" Molly Antopol most brilliantly tells the story of three generations of women on three continents. Molly Antopol was deservedly named one of he National Book Foundation's "5 Under 35" writers.
Inappropriate Behavior Inappropriate Behavior
by Murray Farish

This book is full of unpleasantness. These are miserable, excellent stories, featuring conspiracy theorists, perverts, depressive psychopaths, and uncontrollable adolescents. Farish plays with stream-of-consciousness narration, sliding in and out of his characters' deranged psyches. The stories often seem to begin with a straightforward recollection of events, and to end on a disconcerting, surreal note. For all its darkness, this is a funny book. Farish sets out to prove that you don't have to be an optimist to be happy, nor do you have to be successful to be interesting. This is America the beautiful, in all its ugly glory.
Boxers & Saints Boxers & Saints
by
Gene Luen Yang
This is a touching story told with lightness and imagination about a difficult time in Chinese history.  A young man, who loves the stories in Chinese opera, wants to learn kung fu from a master. When the master refuses to let him join the class, Little Bao, watches and teaches himself.   Yang shows how this young boy  loses his father and the love of his life as he becomes the ruthless leader of the Boxer Rebellion.  It is a difficult story, but Yang draws you in with his bright colors and clear graphic style.  Yang is the one of the leading graphic storytellers of our day.  Saints is told from the point of view of the Christians through the eyes of Four-Girl, the child her parents could even bother to name properly.

  • Cedric

CedricCedric is a shy Corgi puppy. His picture has even been hiding from me! Here he is when he was four months-old, on November 29th.

He is probably a little bigger by now, but I am sure he is just as cute! Maybe he has grown into those fabulous ears of his!
