The Invention of Wings The Invention of Wings
by Sue Monk Kidd

Sue Monk Kidd is a master at creating strong women characters in whom you become very invested. In The Invention of Wings, she has outdone herself. Sarah is the daughter of a plantation owner in Charleston, South Carolina. When she turns eleven, she is given a slave of her own - and promptly refuses the gift. Alternating between the two girls as they become women, and the story of their friends and families, this is a powerful novel with an unforgettable and satisfying ending. This is her best novel since The Secret Life of Bees.
A Constellation of Vital Phenomena A Constellation of Vital Phenomena
by Anthony Marra

Ten years and two wars in the post-Soviet Chechen Republic are recounted over five days through the lives and memories of a small group of villagers caught in the crosshairs of the conflict. At times beautiful, at others brutal, this is a stunning portrait of a lesser known chapter in our modern world. Marra has written a first novel as powerful as The Kite Runner or Everything is Illuminated.
When We Were the Kennedys When We Were the Kennedys
by Monica Wood

This is NOT a book about the Kennedys (maybe just a small part towards the end). It is the memoir of Monica Wood who grew up in a small Maine mill town, Mexico, Maine. She is one of four sisters living with their parents in a third floor walk-up. The mother and girls are devastated when the father drops dead at age 57. Monica has fond memories of these sad and difficult days. She is a third grader in a French parochial school when the story begins in April 1963. November 1963 changes their whole perspective. From the book's title you can guess. I loved this book - her school memories are mine. This would nake a great bookclub choice.
Love & War Love & War
by Mary Matalin & James Carville

This memoir goes back and forth between Mary and James. I enjoy both their styles and their writing equally. Reading this felt like I was at a dinner party with them; they completely enthralled me with their stories of politics, New Orleans, marriage and celebration.
