January 8, 2014

The new year brings a new mayor to Boston - and a new manager to Wellesley Books. Our beloved manager, Deb Sundin, went on to further adventures in the book world at her local library. She was our fearless leader and captain of the ship - holding that rudder firm through everything from Harry Potter midnight release parties to welcoming the legendary Julie Andrews.

Jeremy Solomons And now the next chapter begins as we welcome our new manager, Jeremy Solomons. This is his first week here at Wellesley Books, so please stop in to give him a warm welcome! Jeremy brings an exciting and eclectic background in both literature and theater to us and we look forward to new adventures with Jeremy at the helm. He has only been here a couple of days, but it already feels like he is one of us. It is a very exciting time!

Alice Greenway

Meet award-winning author Alice Greenway on Thursday, January 23rd at 6:00pm as she celebrates the release of her new novel, The Bird Skinner with a reading and launch party at Wellesley Books. Join Alice for conversation, light refreshments, and lively discussion.

This is the Story of a Happy Marriage This is the Story of a Happy Marriage
by Ann Patchet
t
Pretend you're having coffee with Ann Patchett and she's filling you in on her experiences. That's the intimate feeling of this wonderful book of essays which delves into Patchett's views on writing, relationships, her dog, her family, etc.. You'll finish this too quickly and will probably want to reread it.
Someone Else's Love Story
by Joshilyn Jackson

A young woman with her 3 year-old son is on route to a new life when she happens to be in a life altering confrontation. I was impressed by the interlocking, well-drawn characters and the nuance of their stories. Different stories are not told in an overly heavy-handed way and the exchanges between two friends were always a delight.
Three Parts Dead Three Parts Dead
by Max Gladstone

What happens when a god dies? In Gladstone's book, you bring in the necromancer lawyers to put together the pieces and get a city dependent on divine power functioning again. A deliciously dark take on what happens when something is 'too big to fail.' Part legal thriller, part murder mystery with a dash of gargoyles, dark magic, and a good sense of humor.
Mastering the Art of Soviet Cooking Mastering the Art of Soviet Cooking
by Anya Von Bremzen

This book is a family story, a brief history of the USSR, and a food memoir about largely awful food (though the Salat Olivier sounds weirdly delicious). Even if you usually eschew the food-lit genre, you should check it out!

Almost Super Almost Super by Marion Jenson (due out 1/21/14)
Recommended by Henry, age 10
Almost Super is a great book. It is very funny because of the things Rafter and Benny say. There were a lot of times when I was surprised at what had just happened. It is a real page turner. I just wanted to read and read it. It is a great book for those who like funny fantasy books.
                                                                                                                      Independent Study

Independent Study by Joelle Charbonneau
Recommended by Olivia, age 15
Independent Study is a book that kept me riveted until the final page. Full of mystery, intrigue, and more tests, this book improves upon its predecessor, The Testing. Cia has survived the testing, but she soon finds out the University is no less perilous. I would recommend this book for fans of action and adventure.
