October 30, 2013

We are busily at work choosing the best titles and gift ideas for our annual Holiday Recommendations booklet. Our goal is to have it in your hands on Small Business Saturday, November 30th (or sooner!). It is our greatest pleaure to put the perfect book or gift in your hands.

The Coastal Table No need to worry about planning your holiday recipes if you come to local food writer, cooking instructor and recipe developer, Karen Covey's "Cooking the Books" event for The Coastal Table on Wednesday, November 6th at 7:00pm.  Karen will be preparing and showcasing dishes that capture seaside living in New England at its freshest and most innovative. Tickets for this event are $10.00 and available in store or on our website and include yummy samples!

Francesca Lia Block Dive into the lyrical prose of Francesca Lia Block (author of Weetzie Bat and Dangerous Angels) on Thursday, November 7th at 7:00pm as she introduces you to the haunting post-apocalyptic world of her new novel, Love in the Time of Global Warming.  Block tackles difficult issues including environmental disaster, gender identity, friendship, loss, and first love with true grace and beauty. Share an intimate evening with the author as she takes questions from fans, talks about writing, and signs books.

Henriette Lazaridis Power Tuesday, November 12th at 7:00pm is a double-billed night of fabulous debut authors as Henriette Lazaridis Power and Marjan Kamali discuss and sign their highly regarded novels The Clover House and Together Tea. These novels share many of the same themes of living in two cultures: the pull and bind of tradition, food, and family relationships will ensure Marjan Kamali a lively reading and discussion. And to further add to your enjoyment for the evening, our neighbors Gustare will be hosting an olive oil tasting (6:00-7:00pm) before our event begins and we will be enjoying some treats from our local eatery Caf Mangal at the event.

A Hologram for the King Great minds think alike. Bill and Betty have both chosen  A Hologram for the King by Dave Eggers for their upcoming book group discussions! You can join Betty on Tuesday, November 12 at noon for her Lunchtime Book Group. Bill's Book Group for Guys is on Thursday, December 5th at 7:00pm - tickets are $25 and include the book and beer, wine or a select single malt whisky. This should be fun!

Eminent Hipsters Eminent Hipsters
by Donald Fagen

Over the years I've generally held to the belief that I'm not much of a Steely Dan fan, an opinion that--like most of my opinions--I've never been shy about sharing with friends and total strangers. But reading this book has made me realize, first, that the number of Steely Dan songs I've always liked or have grown to like far exceeds the handful of Steely Dan songs that drive me nuts because of their obtuseness and/or Donald Fagen's vocals, and, second, that Fagen is a helluva prose writer and that his grouchiness (partly sincere and partly an authorial strategy, I think) is kinda charming and amusing and only rarely overplayed. He's my kind of grouch, and folks, he might be yours too. He also has a sharp sense of humor and an immense store of knowledge about the history of jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock 'n' roll.
The Goldfinch The Goldfinch
by Donna Tartt

If, for some reason, you have missed Donna Tartt's eariler works, now is the time to jump on board. The Goldfinch is a sweeping tale that begins with a blast at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and courses through the days of young Theodore Decker as he copes with a parentless world. The characters he meets along the way will be indelible in your mind. This amazing book is an accomplishment both in the writing AND the reading.
Stay Up With Me Stay Up With Me
by Tom Barbash

This is a wonderful collection of "human" stories focusing on families struggling with trauma of some kind, and the connections we make with one another in these familiar and not so familiar situations. They are dark, comic and touching.
Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume II Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 2
edited by Benjamin Griffin & Harriet E. Smith

Volume Two is very interesting as was the first volume. I'm guessing that most readers ( myself included ) are not familiar with some of the people and events Mark Twain mentions. Some of the big scandals of his time are forgotten now. This volume is as discursive as the first.  I love reading American History written by someone who lived it -- he seems to know everyone!

Dog of the Week

  • Sophie

Sophie We are saddened by the loss of one of our best customers - Sophie the Boston Terrier. She had been visiting us since the store opened as Wellesley Booksmith in 1999, and she celebrated her 14th birthday shortly before her passing.  You could most often find her licking her best pal Barry's face after getting her treat at the front register.  All of us were impressed by her indomitable spirit as a senior dog.  Here she is as our Dog of the Week just before  Halloween in 2008.
